Hawks Run out of Ammo in Loss to Fredericksburg, 21-14
Canyon Lake was shut-out in the second half and Fredericksburg was able to score 15 points for a comeback win and first a Hawk first loss of this campaign, 21-14.
“This game was like the Blanco game.” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We did not play well tonight and it is hard to win on the road, but it’s one game and we cannot let this loss affect our game next week…..give credit to Fredericksburg, they took advantage and won the game tonight.”
Having a run success rate of less than 4 yards per tote was a big factor in this loss and with so many players having to do double duty due to injuries did seem to make it hard for having any smooth sailing in the running game.
When a Slot-T team cannot get to a hefty run average, then adding penalties to the mix will make it hard for The Lake to be able to control the ball for long drives and coming up short on 2 out of 6 fourth down tries tells the story in a season low 14 point game.
Canyon Lake came out of their half-time refreshments by being shut-out by the Billies while having very few explosive plays to apply pressure and take control.
The Lake did respond to Fredericksburg’s first score with an 11 play drive covering 83 yards and scoring with 13 seconds on the first quarter.
Another similar drive after a huge interception by Greyson Lee that helped set up CL on the Billies’ 40 yard line with a chance to increase their slim 1 point lead.
This drive had 14 snaps with all of the yardage being gained on the ground. This set of downs had just one run over 10 yards when Tristan Chacon went for 12 yards down to FHS’s 36 yard line.
Canyon Lake did have one pass that fell incomplete which had The Lake having to convert a fourth down play needing 4 yards and Trenton Lorett was up to the task with a 5 yarder. Lorett would get the honors with a 2 yard touchdown that would end up being the last score for the contest.
The Hawks would not get any further that the Billies 45 yard line after a series of misplays and penalties that would thwart any chance of scoring again.
“We had 3 goals at the beginning of the season,” Senior JT Greene said in retrospect. “Win district, make the playoffs and make a long run in the post-season….we still have the other two and our Leadership (players) by example will have to come through by continuing to fight with everything we have and have the rest of the team to take our lead.”
Canyon Lake will now be back at The Nest and take on the Lampasas Badgers who have crafted out a good season with a much lethal offense than CL has faced so far this season. Both Schools are tied for 2nd place in the district race with the winner getting an inside track for 2nd seed and outside chance with a District Title.
The last two weeks of District 14-4A Division I still has a lot of intrigue the the following schedule for each team. Burnet would be the only school that would need a miracle for being invited to the Post-Season Dance.
Team Games Remaining Final Game District Record
Liberty Hill Taylor Canyon Lake 3-0
Canyon Lake Lampasas Liberty Hill 2-1
Lampasas Canyon Lake Fredericksburg 2-1
Taylor Liberty Hill Burnet 1-2
Fredericksburg Burnet Lampasas 1-2
Burnet Fredericksburg Taylor 0-3
Liberty Hill has risen to the top and will have the inside track for a District 14-4A Div. I title with a win against Taylor this Friday.
Canyon Lake can tie the Panthers by winning out and with two weeks remaining there is a chance of having several schools bunched up and needing the UIL to contract a statistician from MIT for help in doing the deciphering.
The Hawks have suffered several injuries this season and now will be needing to see if their depth might be able to stem this tide for winning out.
Go Hawks!!
