CL Hawks Win Convincingly Over Johnson City, 11-0

Canyon Lake finished their Johnson City/Blanco Tournament undefeated after a convincing win over the Eagles, 11-1.

“We still have to make plays and we did everything well,” Head Coach Hayley Galloway commented.

On where Coach thinks the team is as district comes calling soon, “I think we are hitting our stride at the right time….I would rather us being where we are now than having all of our good games coming earlier in the season.”

The Hawks did what they needed to do when facing a beatable team, beat them and doing it convincingly.

All 3 aspects of a winning formula was present with a good pitching outing from Maddy Puente from the circle. Giving up just one hit while striking out 8 Eagles, was just what the Doctor ordered.

“I can pitch better but I was just throwing my fast ball,” Maddy Puente recounted. “I will work on my offense but defensively we did good.”

That was accomplished in grand fashion as The Lake jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings.

Marley Carrizales was the main instigator in this contest going 4 for 4 while knocking in 4 teammates with two of those rbi’s coming in that 2nd inning with 2 outs.

Jessie Melendez knocked in CL’s two runs to open the game with a sharp single that scored Carrizales and Bailey Bryan.

               Way to Go Hawks!

Canyon Lake put this game out of reach after scoring 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning that had some fireworks from two Hawks. Bryan was first, with a triple and then an Angie Rodriguez home-run that cleared the bases and put this contest on cruise control up, 9-0.

“I was just telling myself to make contact,” Rodriguez said when recounting what she was thinking while she was coming to bat. “Making contact is my goal and I am getting more consistent and with that comes confidence.”

With another strong bat, Canyon Lake will need those weapons when games in district commence and that is a huge asset when a line-up has some lethal weapons.

Maddy Puente pitches a gem after giving up just one hit and striking out 8 in Hawks win.

Those finishing touches came in what would be the final frame in this timed tournament battle, with two more Hawk runs. Kaylee Puente reached base after an Eagle error and scored on a ground out off the sacrifice bunt and error of Kaylee Moore.

Carrizales would drive in the final run with her 4th single in the game driving in Moore for a more than adequate 11th run and undefeated flight through this tournament.

Kaitlyn Keltner took control of her work in the circle in that final inning and finished the game striking out the side as Keltner and M. Puente combined with 11 strikeouts.

Canyon Lake will be back in action in Burnet and another chance of improving as District 28-4A comes calling on March 15th.

Way to Go Hawks!!
