Canyon Lake, The Best 8-2 team in State!!

Canyon Lake is the best 8-2 team in State that is not in the playoffs, and

unfortunately the scenario played out like many people thought when Wimberley and Navarro won their games sending the Hawks into a longer than expected off season.

The Hawks did not let that scenario keep them from finishing on a winning note, as Canyon Lake put the collar on the Bulldogs, 55-33 at Bandera Stadium last Friday night.

CLHS scored the first touchdown of the second half and put this game out of reach for Bandera.

The season was memorable for other reasons besides not making the playoffs, this campaign allowed the fans and parents to see a team bond together through hard work in crafting another brick on the Canyon Lake house for future seasons.

The Hawks, you can safely say are a better team than many teams in playoffs for the 2011 season, but the handwriting is on the wall with a future looking bright for Canyon Lake.

Canyon Lake scored on their second possession when the team took three plays to cover 68 yards.

The running back tandem of Eduardo Covarrubias 14 yard run and Zach Henshaw two runs covering 54 total yards for the first of many touchdowns.

“The game was great and was the last game for the Seniors,” Running Back Henshaw stated. “We wanted to finish off good!”

CL’s defense held the Bulldogs on a leash on their next drive when a fourth down incompletion stalled Bandera’s drive on the Hawk’s five yard line.

Vintage Canyon Lake for the next 13 plays for 95 yards and over six minutes off the clock.

The drive had a fourth down conversion on a Matt Magness to Doug Hubnik 21 yard pass that set up CL on the Bulldogs 29 yard line.

THE DRIVE went 110 yards when your team is overcoming 15 yards of penalties. Magness caught three passes for 47 yards while Henshaw was a recipient of 14 yards receiving and 25 yards rushing.

There would be more water under the bridge as the two teams pulled a ‘Sealy’ game scoring back and forth on the next four drives.

Branson Belcher had a three yard run and Hubnik a 40 yard reception help keep the game under control. The scoring barrage would end the half with Canyon Lake holding a 28-14 advantage.

The one-two punch of Henshaw and Magness took it’s toll on the Bulldogs to start the second half.

Henshaw had a 26 yard run to the 40 yard line that gave a Belcher to Magness 34 yard pass play that took less than two minutes to increase the lead to 21 points.

Magness would pass Eric Nelson for the most touchdowns receiving in a career with his three touchdowns during the game, the three touchdown receiving was also a record for Canyon Lake Football.

“Matt Magness is one of the guys that would do anything for the team,” Henshaw boasted. “He and all of our receivers made us more than just a one dimensional offense.”

How about a vintage Henshaw 39 yard run later in the quarter that put the young man over 2000 yards rushing for the season.

Henshaw rushed for 227 yards and the touchdown for one of the most celebrated Hawks. That touchdown would turn out to be his last one for his career as a Canyon Lake Hawk.

“We wanted to finish,” Senior Henshaw said. “The offensive line was awesome and they were my brothers this season.”

Magness also finished his career with a spectacular back of the end zone catch for 29 yards.

The catch also allowed Belcher to break Ross Wagliardo’s record for touchdown passes in a game with five.

Wagliardo did the feat against Llano and still holds the lead for passing yardage when he passed for 340 yards in a game against Ingram that same year.

The last drive of the third quarter would also have Henshaw’s last run for two yards that helped convert a fourth and one.

The next crop of playmakers helped cap the drive when Isaiah Gutierrez caught a 18 yard pass from (you guessed it) Belcher on the first play of the fourth quarter and a 55-20 lead.

The game closed with two mop up drives from Bandera for a final score, 55-33.

“I can’t describe how great the Coaches are,” Henshaw closed. “They were my second ‘Dad’ and I did not even have to ask and they were always there for me.”
