CL Hawks Throw a Shut-Out in Win over Marble Falls, 7-0

Playing the Mustangs has been an uphill battle as these last two years, The Lake, has carved out 264 yards (2018) and 257 (2019) but the good news was having a CL Defense pitching two consecutive shut-outs.
“We told the players, ‘If they can’t score then they can’t win’,” Head Coach Charlie Drum stated astutely. “We are proud for them (the team) as they stayed calm and sometimes we need the defense to respond when our offense isn’t scoring points.”
This was the first time Canyon Lake had scored a win after scoring only one touchdown. The previous record was 14 points in wins over Liberty Hill (2009), Fredericksburg (2009), and Blanco (2011). It was also the least amount of points aggregate followed in a win. That contest was against Blanco in 2015 which was a loss to those Panthers, 14-0.
“It was like two pitchers going at it as Marble Falls came to play,” Coach Drum continued. “But this is a long season and it was good for our defense to get a shut-out win.”
Penalties would be Marble Falls best defense as the Hawks kept shooting themselves on their foot which would make it hard to get first downs, or at least keep running. As those miscues would keep CL from getting momentum and putting MF in a situation of not seeing a more lethal Hawk offense.
Multiple penalties stopped those first two Hawk drives which would shorten this battle as these two slot-t teams would keep the game clock running.
After a, ‘You don’t want to hear what was said in the dressing room’, half-time talk, Canyon Lake would take advantage on their first drive after another stop by the CL defense plugging the holes and holding this Mustang team with a 3 plays and a punt.

It would take Canyon Lake 4 plays to cover 68 yards and a score when Peyton McMullen found Jeremy Greene in the end zone for what would be the winning score.
Greene would also excel on the defensive side of the ball as the other pivotal part of this game had MF Mustangs reaching the Hawk 7 yard line during the 2nd quarter.
With a fist down on CL’s 9 yard line and a two yard run to start this series, Greene would chase the Mustang’s QB for what would be a 14 yard loss causing an intentional grounding that would have a 4th down and needing 26 yards for a score for the home team.
“That is what we work on every day,” Greene said with resolve. “I like to hit the quarterbacks in the mouth and we wanted to put him with the dogs.”
On that final drive CL would take the ball 6 minutes left with one goal of running out the clock and not giving Marble Falls another chance in tying or winning.
There were two instances on 3rd down and long during that last drive and having the potential in making this game way more exciting than the the Hawks would want to experience.
Derek Wiatrek led CL’s Offense with 124 rushing yards in a defensive battle.
On both occasions, Derek Wiatrek responded with just enough yards to keep those chains moving and a win.
On a 3rd down and needing 9 yards Wiatrek ran for 10 yards and another set of downs. That series had Ethan Slater with a one yard run and then an incomplete pass put CL in a mess that Wiatrek would not be denied.
On the next set of downs the same scenario had The Lake with a 3rd and 8 yards needed. The call had a Wiatrek getting that exact amount of real estate and more time running off the clock.
The Falls had a defensive lineman that made this a tough night as this behemoth player (Josh Whitecotton) played havoc in his pursuit for tackles. That was one reason why Wiatrek would have success.
“That is basically why we continued that drive,” Coach Drum assessed. “It was hard for us to block #94 (Whitecotton) and there is an old adage that says if you can’t block them then run right at them and that did not give him enough time to pursue for a tackle.”
Coach continued, “Wiatrek wanted the ball and he got it, for those first downs.”
“I was ready to run someone over,” Wiatrek said. “I wanted to get out with my head down and they (the line) got the blocks.”

“This was a tough game and we really showed what we need to do and we executed and just kept our foot on the pedal,” Wiatrek continued.
Canyon Lake will be back in action with another road game in Pflugerville Weiss next week for a chance to get that All-Time Record above that .500 mark.
