Canyon Lake’s Defense was Superior in Win Over Blanco, 10-0

CL Hawks Defense had total dominance being evident in their win over Blanco, 10-0 in the Hawk’s (4-1) last pre-district schedule game.

The Lake held these Panthers to 24 yards of offense going into their last desperate drive that ended on CL’s 11 yard line before running out of downs.
Blanco’s deepest penetration, up to that last drive, had the Panthers reaching their own 46 yard line.
A quick history lesson in games played against Blanco. This series has a Panther team that has not backed down from their much larger neighbor through the years. As a whole, the Hawks, have not been at their best offensively. Much of that credit would reside as kudos for this Panther School.
The Hawks ended this battle accumulating 205 yards which ranks 103rd out the 120 contests played (that had game stats compiled). That 102nd best offensive game was in 2008 when CL compiled 217 yards of offense against? Blanco. Difference in those two years besides the obvious 12 years was a 63-0 loss in 2008 and a 10-0 win in 2019.
“This was a defensive slugfest,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said in conclusion of this game. “We are winning those games but we still have a lot to clean-up in all three phases of the game.”
Coach Drum’s 3 phases comes with Special Teams, Offensive, and Defensive sides of the ball. On this night, the Hawks had to rely on their defense to take up the slack as both of those other two phases were not at their peak on this night.
Special teams could not field a punt and the offense had a polar opposite night when compared to those 55 points scored in the week before against Smithville.

Blanco certainly had a say in dictating on what this game would be known for, but in the end….it would be the reliance on a Hawk Defense that controlled the line of scrimmage and kept the Panther’s running on just 3 legs.
“The good news is that we are winning the close games,” Coach Drum closed.
Penalties would be another culprit in slowing down the Hawks offense. With a slot-t, a penalty, can be devastating in stopping a drives. In these past 3 years, it might have taken a 15 yard penalty to do that deed, but this year a 5 yard penalty carries just as much weight in stopping a chance in keeping those chains moving.
Blanco finished this night with 5 first downs with 2 coming on their last drive, but before that offensive outburst, the Panthers had totaled 3 first downs and two of those came with help from a Hawk penalty.
Kolten Ramey wreaked havoc on Blanco’s QB forcing several hurry up throws and finishing plays with two major yardage losses in the form of sacks.

“Crazy night,” Ramey started when asked about the game. “I just try to do my job and I hate quarterbacks.”
That was the scene on this night as the opposition QB was the hunted one from this Hawks defensive line.
“They (Blanco’s offensive line) were cutting (blocking) a lot but I just tried to find the quarterback and go after him,” Ramey continued in recounting the night’s action.
On what CL will need to do as the next round of games is introduced with those District 28-4A foes, “It will be a lot tougher and our pass rush has to get a lot better and we will just have to work harder as we train for district.”
Patrick Almond was another integral player on the defensive side of the ball as this Linebacker was there to sweep up after the Ramey’s scare tactics got these Panthers out of their den.
“Defense wins championships,” Almond said like an old football sage. “We won as a team and our defensive backs played good…our linebackers played good and we wanted to make them search for yards.”
That could be seen throughout this contest as the Panthers looked like a team in a dentist chair about to lose a lot of teeth.
Now, Canyon Lake will have a chance to heal and prepare for a district that what will have several road blocks erected by teams that have improved from last season.
Way to Get Hits Defense!!
Lampasas looks to be the team to beat with an offense that is lights out while Burnet has been a much better team record wise compared to last season.
Add the always tough Liberty Hill and a Billies team that has had a tough schedule and comes into district play with a 2-3 slate.
Next week, the Hawks, will still have their Junior Varsity and CL Gold team in action in Seguin on Thursday while the Freshman and Varsity take this next week off.
A road game in Taylor is next, against a team who has yet to register a win this year.
Another Hawk History Lesson should be known as that was the same situation during the 2014 Season when Canyon Lake would be playing a winless Taylor team only to be their first win, 33-31 by those rascally Ducks.
