Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity make adjustments in taking care of Burnet’s JV going, 2-0 in District 28-4A play, 28-6.

It was a slow start for the Hawks after a Burnet score to end that first quarter leading, 0-6. It took the Bulldogs just 5 plays to travel 72 yards when Ethan Wolfe scored on a 6 yarder up the middle of the Hawks defensive line.
The Hawks up to this point had not had success in moving the ball as Burnet seemed to have more than 11 players inside the box to stop CL’s slot-t offense.
The Lake would have a drive with some huge 3rd down conversions that was composed with 3 explosive plays that would propel CL for their first score on this up and down set of snaps.
CL started this drive with two consecutive negative yardage plays leaving your Host needing 21 yards to keep their drive going. Enter Running Back Devyn Placeres with a 25 yard jet sweep that helped jump start this stagnant offense and a much needed first down.
Two plays later, Noah Du Menil rushed for 15 yards that negated a 3rd down 11 yards needed for a chance to get on the board. Another 3rd down and 12 was converted when Dominik Vaillant ran for 17 yards which would get the Hawks down to the Burnet 13 yard line.
Placeres finished off this surprising drive after converting another 3rd down and long from 10 yards out that tied the game, 6-6 with a little over 6 minutes before halftime.

The Hawk defense rose to the occasion in forcing a 3 play and punt series for Burnet that helped your Hawks to set up shop on their 46 yard line. This time it took three offensive plays with an explosive 51 yard pass play when QB Keith Bowers found Blayne Carnes down the middle and a Hawk lead that would never be threatened in this battle.
Up to this point, CL’s QB Bowers, had not had enough time to get a pass off but with a quick drop and throw it would prove to be just enough. There were Bulldogs all over Bowers when this pass attempt took place.
“Our line did just enough on this play,” Carnes said with precision. “I had to anticipate where the ball would be and I had a little babble with the ball before I could get it for the score.”
This play would be just enough to open the Burnet defense as the Hawk’s second half would be a whole different story in gaining yardage.
That first half saw CL amass 100 rushing yards with an increase of 65 yards for that 2nd half, as those totes, would be in much larger chunks. Burnet had 9 tackles for loss during the first 20 minutes of play but that second stanza saw the Hawks tackled behind their line only 4 times.
Blayne Carnes and Christian Ramirez were instrumental in win over Burnet.
Meanwhile, The Lake’s defense gave up just 115 yards, which had most of that yardage coming from the Bulldogs only score.
Defensive/Offensive Lineman Christian Ramirez was one of many lineman for Canyon Lake that would take control as this game matured.
“Our running backs were doing a good job of getting to the holes,” Ramirez said in response of the difference between the 1st and 2nd halves. “Our mindset was to take the 1st half and control the clock.”
On what it was like when a lineman has so many opponents to block when they have teams stacking the box to stop the run, “We are just following our keys and doing what our coaches tell us to do.”
That certainly played out as CL added another two touchdowns for this game as the Hawks continued into the final quarter.
On what it will take for Canyon Lake to continue their run in district play against Fredericksburg next week, “We will need to have a better mindset and come out more aggressive and with more intensity,” Ramirez admonished.
Canyon Lake’s defense had two interceptions with Dalton Stanley stopping Burnet’s first drive and Carnes with the 2nd one that closed the 2nd half as he ran down the press box sideline on a just missed opportunity for a score.
“The Coaches were wanting me to bat it (the ball) down…but I saw a hole and I was shooting for a pick six,” Carnes recalled. “They had 9 players on the line and we needed to get line blocks but we made adjustments on our blocking for that 2nd half.”
Adjustments had a winning hand as CL’s Junior Varsity (6-1) continue this season with a showdown against Fredericksburg next Thursday.
