Basketball: CL Hawks Get Scalped, While Junior Varsity Got Defensive

Dalton Stanley looking for a good option to get an assist in win over Gonzales JV, 47-37

The Hawk’s Junior Varsity continues to improve after bellowing to a 10 point victory over Gonzales, 47-37.

Signature Homes says, Go Hawks!

“Our defense and tenacity won the game,” Head JV Coach Ryan Garney said. “There are things we need to work on but our defense was the key tonight.”

CLJV’s defense was the catalyst for points in this game after forcing 12 turnovers that helped the Hawks to win each quarter. In scoring 47 points after such an atrocious shooting evening is a testament in how the Hawks defense was in control throughout this battle.

Brock Coburn (12) and Mikey Carrizales (11) both reached double digit scoring in leading CLJV with help from an efficient big man in Matt Taliaferro cleaning the board with 13 rebounds.

Having a larger hole in the rim might be the only solution to a woeful shooting night that The ReSporter will warn the readers that they might want to skip this next line or at least be sure your children cannot see these next numbers.

A shooting percentage of 37% from the floor that included a paltry 10% from beyond the arc and 8% from the free throw line. Dalton Stanley was the lone Hawk to sink a charity stripe shot.

Defense would be the only explanation on how this contest ended in Canyon Lake’s favor with a 40 rebound game that had 14 of those on the offensive side of the court.

Mikey Carrizales poured in 9 Fourth Quarter points in Apache Win.

Canyon Lake’s largest lead was realized during the last quarter when Taliaferro was found racing to the basket after a sweet assist from Jeremy Greene and a Hawk, 43-31 advantage.

Carrizales helped in not letting the Apache’s to get no closer than 6 points after leading with 9 points during the 4th quarter which had the only made 3 pointer along with some fast break points as a result of CL steals in an easier conversion.

CLJV finished their tournament last week by breaking even and will now continue to hone in their skill set as the Christmas break looms in over a week.

A good idea might have some practice with shooting free throws which would not take much for finding that elusive improvement.

HAWKS VARSITY is SCALPED IN LOSS TO GONZALES, 50-43

             Way to Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake lost after building a 19 point lead before halftime, 32-13 to the Apaches with a forgettable 2nd Half.

With 44 seconds before half-time refreshments, Trent MacRoberts scored a bucket that gave CL a 19 point advantage and from that point forward would never come out of their shell as Gonzales would blitz the Hawks on the offensive board while using a zone defense that had Canyon Lake baffled on solving for scoring for the next 16 minutes.

A 37 to 11 run was the result which was actually worse but for a 3 pointer well beyond the 3 point arc as the buzzard was sounding from Tyler Pauly. That bucket went through the nets with silence as this contest was decided well before that make.

“The only option we have is to bounce back,” a dejected Head Coach Lucas Chapman lamented. “We just need to play 4 quarters.”

There will be a redemption day coming quickly as CL will host their Canyon Lake Classic Tournament this Friday-Saturday with two games each of those days.

These next opponents will be a test to see if there is enough fight in this Hawk team that can go for 32 minutes.

That has been a common occurrence this season as The Lake seems to be letting teams back in the tent after building double digit leads. This game against the Apaches was the largest lead Canyon Lake has ever had that ended with a loss.

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!

MacRoberts was the only bright spot in scoring 15 points and securing 13 rebounds. Those rebounds has MacRoberts in the Top 10 for a game.

One more bright spot was being perfect from the free-throw line in making all 5 shots. Two Hawksters had a chance from the stripe as MacRoberts and Rylee Spaulding would be the only players able to draw a foul for a chance to shoot.

All but one Hawk got into the scoring books but after those 15 points from MacRoberts, Canyon Lake had Spaulding and Ben Rowe next in line tallying 6 points a piece. The rest of the team (7 players) were finished scoring after making their one bucket.

Canyon Lake can work on bouncing back this Friday when they tip-off at 11am against Somerset and then again against SACS with that tip-off at 3:30pm.

Go Hawks!!
