CL Hawk Freshman Swarm the Eagle Pass Eagles, 58-32

Canyon Lake Hawk Freshman prepare to wreak havoc on EP Eagles.

The Hawk Freshman Team started their game like an ant bed that had just been walked on as CL swarmed the Eagle Pass Eagles with unstoppable energy in this win, 58-32.

                Let’s Go Hawks!!

“We are a really competitive and physical team,” Head Freshman Coach Javier Almanza stated. “We were just a stronger team and I want our team to get a feel on how the game is being called as they become very emotional after a call and I just try and help calm them down….but tonight we were not pressing out of the gate and we got into the flow.”

That would be an understatement for a team that had a double digit lead with just 5:41 left to play in that opening quarter. That lead would continue to grow throughout as this game unfolded with every Hawk getting quality time.

This Freshman team had a battalion of players and all but 3 of the 15 players scored 2 or more points that was led by Hunter Anderson (11) followed by Adrian Duque with 9 points.

“We had been working all week on getting a better start and we wanted to come out strong,” Hunter Anderson said.

When asked what it was like to be able to perform in the main gym, Anderson surmised, “It was intimidating at first but once we got it all under our belt we were able to play with confidence.”

Hunter Anderson led this brigade with 8 steals as Canyon Lake’s defense finished with 26 thefts as a team. Ty Sellers and Helijah Johnson were next, tied with 4 steals a piece.

Travis Parma and Hunter Anderson take care of Eagle Pass, 58-32.

On the flip side, one of the shortest Hawks, Travis Parma led the Hawks with 7 rebounds while laying it all on the court in taking a charge from one of the larger Eagle players near the end of the game that had the fans going wild after the carnage left on the floor.

“I was thinking I had to help the team and take the charge,” Parma said like a statue. “I just had a turnover and taking the charge would even the score.”

On playing in the main gym, Parma said, “It was intimidating but we knew we could play after the game started and just got used to it.”

Canyon Lake shot 41% from the floor but that low percentage was helped by controlling the offensive boards. The Lake Freshman finished with one more offensive rebound than what was secured on the defensive side of the court.

Eagle Pass did open it up in those two middle quarters with a combined 23 points but CL was still able to increase their lead by another 9 points scoring 32 and enjoying a, 49-25 lead going into that final stanza.

              Let’s Go Hawks!!

Coach Almanza substituted in groups of 5 which would wear down the Eagles on this night as having energy was not a problem to exert in this win.

This would be a good way to end the first half of the season as this Freshman team will be getting ready for district play at the first of January.

Swarming ants can cause a lot of damage and on this night that damage was against an Eagle.

Way to Go Hawks!!
