Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity swatted a YellowJacket in winning their 2nd District 28-4A contest for the year and on the road, 48-35.

            Way to Go Hawks!!

“This game was ugly,” Head Junior Varsity Coach Ryan Garney said. “But there is no such thing as an ugly win…so we will take it!”

There are certain consistencies for this crew in covering their last two wins….this team will have everyone involved in the rebound aspect and poor free throw shooting. Actually that poor free throw shooting has been evident at the start of the season too.

Forcing turnovers is a common occurrence which has helped cover-up for many of those shortcomings, which was the case on this night.

Mikey Carrizales led the charge scoring 12 points while Jeremy Greene (8) and Shawn Pendleton (7) followed suit. Every Hawk had a rebound which happened against that Bandera JV win last week. In those two games, CL has averaged 41 rebounds which helped on both sides of the court.

With those 2nd chance points and keeping their opponent with a, one and done motif, has helped in forging these victories.

Greene led CL with 5 steals and 3 assists and a multitude of players covering the court like a table cloth. (Except a little more messy)

“Yeah we could have played better….we can improve as a whole,” Pendleton assessed. “We will need to focus and concentrate and get our plays down. We have to take care of the ball and every time we get a fast break not have a turnover….our ball handling led to a sloppy game.”

The Hawks never trailed in this game but Llano did get close early during the start of the 2nd quarter and again with 5 minutes remaining. The YellowJackets had whittled a Hawk 12 point advantage to 6 points (38-32).

A CL defense that clamped down in allowing 3 points for the home team and shooting 67% from the floor during that final stanza did help in making this game feel better for that ride back home.

This next week, Canyon Lake will be on the road to Fredericksburg on Tuesday before welcoming Wimberley to the Hawk Nest on Friday to finish their first round of District 28-4A action.

Way to Go Hawks!!
