Junior Varsity Lady Hawks Finished Just Short in Loss to Billies JV, 37-35
CL’s Junior Varsity took Fredericksburg’s JV to the very end before a 2 point loss, 35-37.
Kylie Rust led the Hawks with 11 points while Adriel Rico lead Canyon Lake totaling 8 rebounds in this nip and tuck set-back.
The Billies established a 6 point lead to close out the first quarter and then added another 3 points going into to halftime leading, 20-11.
Canyon Lake would win the 2nd half after outscoring the Visitors, 24-17 but needed one more bucket to send this game into overtime.
The Lake had 18 turnovers in those first two quarters helping jettison Fredericksburg to that 9 point advantage. Making baskets was not a friend either, with 15% from shooting percentage it was a wonder that this Hawk team was not down by a greater margin.
Starting the 2nd Half with a 7-2 run helped in closing the gap as that momentum continued with Canyon Lake down just 4 points entering their final period, 28-24. With one minute remaining in that 3rd quarter had the Hawks down by 4 points when Alex Jones sank a free throw and then a smooth 3 pointe from the corner on an in-bounds pass helped in closing the Billie advantage.
“I saw the door and had the ball in my hands and I just went for it,” Jones said matter of factly. “That doesn’t happen….I just don’t remember the shot I just knew I had to shoot it.”
As a Hawk fan can see that there was a lot going through Jones’ head on the court that turned out to what was needed at the right time to help CL for a chance of winning this contest. Two steals and 5 rebounds were those other ingredients needed that had Alex and the rest of this team to get right at the door for a win.
Rust scored 8 of her points in the 2nd half while leading, The Lake with 6 steals, for a team that forced 18 thefts in this down to the wire contest.
Rico had two 3 pointers to go along with her 8 rebounds while Katie Taliaferro finished with 7 points, 2 assists, and 3 steals helping supply more arsenal to the Hawks weaponry.
One of those Taliaferro’s assist was to Allysia Menchaca that drew the game to a one point deficit, 33-34 with 1:34 remaining in the game. Then a Rust free throw with 46 seconds had this game tied up for the first time since that opening tip-off that started this battle.
Fredericksburg was woeful from the foul line but the one player that had success was sent to the line with 10 seconds remaining and calmly sank both of her freebies.
That would end the game that had the Hawks on the losing end, but there is still 4 games left to finish this season with a streak of better outcomes.
Way to Go Hawks!!
