CLJV Hawks Baseball Finish Wimberley Tourney, 2-1 after Win over La Vernia
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity finished their Wimberley Tournament in 2nd place after disposing the La Vernia Bears to the tune of, 10-0.
“I felt our team played really well,” Head JV Coach Alan Cox stated. “We are really hitting our stride. I felt we were the best team out here and could have won the tournament. Marble Falls, who we lost the opening game to, had a solid club. The umps kinda took the game out of the players hands as there were 14 walks in the game between both teams….I would have liked to play them again under different circumstances.”
Another good performance from the pitching team while the bases were full on many occasions due receiving 10 base on balls.
Gunnar Walker has been one of the power hitters on this year’s team but on this night Walker became the only Hawk player with a hit that did not go for extra bases. In fact, Zach Elson, Austin Bowers, and Bade Holland cashed in with triples.
“It was a great feeling to get a hold of one today,” Elson said in response to his 3 bagger. “My swing has been coming around, it really felt good today.”
“Defensively, I made the transition from shortstop to 3rd base this year,” Elson continued in responding to his fielding. “It has been an adjustment, but I am getting more comfortable with each game.”
The Lake finished the tourney with a, 2-1 record with the only set-back at the hands of Marble Falls. CLJV was able to run-rule the two wins finishing this tourney with an 8 runs per game average.
CL Hawks were able to jump on the Bears quickly with a 5 run first inning.
Six straight Hawks reached base to start the contest and had scored 4 runs before the first out had been recorded. That last run resulted after a La Vernia error scoring Brandon Monk.
Elson greeted LV pitcher with a lead-off triple and scored on a Bowers sacrifice fly ball that would have the Hawks up, 6-0 going into the third inning.
Both teams came up empty on the 3rd frame as Holland continued his previous game no-hit outing. In the two games combined, Holland had a sparkling pitching stat line.

Pretty good tournament, as this dominating offense, allowed Holland to pitch against two opponents as he would give away to Cody Jones to finish off the Bears on this win. Holland finished his two day outing throwing 108 pitches.
Jones ended the game on the mound after starting behind the plate.
“I am a little sore, but I learned at a young age to play both positions and play back to back days,” Jones said in response in catching in the last two outings. “It is a transition I have had to make my whole career. Many times I would have to go from the mound to behind the plate or vice-versa. I am happy to help any way I can.”
Canyon Lake will be back in action in Boerne as they open District 28-4A play on Monday with a double header starting at 11am and 1pm.
“I feel this team can compete with anyone,” Coach Cox finished. “I love the way we are playing and I have total confidence in this team from top to bottom. It is a great feeling to be out on the field with these young men each day. They come to the park to compete and have great attitudes.”
