                Let’s Go Hawks!!

A first time contest this week when Canyon Lake will take their bus south to Beeville to battle the Trojans with the winner breaking their 1-1 record to a positive percentage as pre-district battles continue.

The Hawks had this date with Georgetown East View replaced with a team that had a breakout year, 11-1 last season. That Beeville team lost several seniors and CL fans might recall a similar situation after going 3 rounds in the playoffs in 2017 and losing that loaded senior class.

The Lake looks to rebound for a season that could go more than a first round in Bi-District.

Looking at the games played so far, Beeville, lost their opening contest to Boerne which was a scrimmage for Canyon Lake.

Yes, it was just a scrimmage, but the Hawks did have a very good game against the Greyhound club which should help on the confidence side.

That next game was a win over Sinton which had the Trojans down seven points entering their 4th quarter. A 22 point 12 minutes turned that game around for a win and momentum entering this week’s contest.

QB William Harper threw for 292 yards hitting 11 completions on 17 attempts. Jalen Spicer was Harper’s favorite target and totaled 102 receiving yards on four receptions.

It was a balanced attack with 260 yards rushing combined with those 192 passing yards.

Trey Martinez finished with 101 yards on the ground and was followed by that same receiver, Spicer, who scored 2 touchdowns with 72 yards and 7 yard average.

In Beeville’s game with Boerne, this Trojan team garnered just 208 yards of offense all but 13 yards came on the ground.

A key for CL will rely on how well their defense can control the line of scrimmage and force turnovers or a punt.

Beeville has speed at their skill positions and the Hawk defense will need to win those battles much like they did in their game against La Grange.

Canyon Lake has needed players to step-up as injuries have led Coaches to fill those positions with the, ‘next man up’. That depth has this team being right on the lip of the cup of having a, 2-0 record.

That loss to Wimberley played a key roll in last week’s run-a-way win and that motivation might be the determining factor for this Friday night battle.

Forcing turnovers has been a welcomed sight so far this season and having yardage via the pass will make future contests a tougher aspect for opponents to game plan.

The Hawks have 280 yards passing and that can make a slot-t offense unstoppable on many of those Friday Night Lights evenings.
