MVMS 7A are Short Handed in Loss to SVMS, 27-06

Coach Burger in post-game talk with MV Hawks after suffering first loss of season.

Mountain Valley 7A team was short handed in loss to Smithson Valley Middle School, 27-06.

“We had to call up players,” Head Coach Brandon Burger started. “We only had one day of practice but our kids battled…Smithson Valley is good but we were just empty handed but we competed and came out of this game with a lot of positives.”

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!

The Hawks had to scramble on this important contest that had a one loss MV team facing an undefeated SVMS squad. Having a covid dilemma that had up to 9 players not being able to compete with several of those students as starters.

Not a good way of showing your best on a football field but a situation that playing with the cards that were dealt that had no Aces just Jokers in the deck.

The Mustangs were quick and to the point when they scored on their 2nd play after the kick-off and having only 39 seconds off the clock, 8-0.

MVMS was till able to get some traction on their first time with the ball in driving to the Mustangs one yard line before coming up empty on a encouraging drive.

A nifty pass from QB Tyler Soza to Cayden Mills 39 pard pass play to the SVMS’ 7 yard line that also featured running back Gavin Williams with another explosive play on a 15 yard run.

“They had a big defensive end and my teammate, Eli Hammons helped me have time to get the pass off,” Soza said like a technician. “Our whole offensive line really blocked good on that play.”

Cayden Mills and Tyler Soza had two pass plays for 76 yards in game with SVMS.

“I was just trying to catch the ball,” Mills said with simplicity. “I just kept saying to myself, ‘I have to catch the ball’ and then I just wanted to get more yardage.”

Smithson Valley would use a pass play to score on their last possession before half that had the home team with a 14 point lead heading into halftime.

MV was left short again on their first possession on the 2nd half and the Mustangs scored on 3 plays and increasing their lead to, 20-0 with still over 5 minutes in that 3rd period.

A Hawk fumble was next and a Valley one play score that had this game in the can with a home team enjoying a 27 point advantage.

But the never say die Hawks would respond with a stellar drive in response in using a 15 play and 60 yard drive for their only score.

This drive took right at 10 minutes off the clock that spanned to quarters. Another pass combo, when Soza found Mills on a perfect pass and catch sequence for 27 yards and setting up Mountain Valley deep in the Mustangs side of the field (24 yard line).

Let’s Go Hawks and Hit’em Hard

Eli Hammons followed that play with an 11 yard run and with a 4th down penalty on SV had Soza with a QB keeper from 4 yards out and score.

A disappointing loss that can only have thoughts of what would or could have been the result if all hands had been on deck.

Smithson Valley was certainly a good team and deserve kudos for their play….even tho they were able to use all 52 cards in their deck that had the Hawks with some crazy 8’s.

Mountain Valley will welcome New Braunfels MS to the Hawk Nest this coming Tuesday in hopes of getting back on the winning side with more cards to play with.

Go Hawks!!
