CL Hawk Freshman Lose to Billies JV-B team, 34-28
CL Hawks just missed a completed comeback after a late Billie score in a, 34-28 loss.
This contest had some JV participants that moved down for this first game, since both schools, have an abundance of players. The ReSporter watched the Billie Freshman team play the week before in a game where they were trounced by a Mason Puncher team.
That Fredericksburg Freshman team would use a lot of those JV Billies in this contest as a game pitted as a freshman vs. freshman would have gone into the win column for your Hawks.
Be that as it may, this game started with Fredericksburg scoring a quick 14 points that had CL’s Freshman in a comeback motif for much of this battle.
A five play drive by Freddie that was capitalized by a 31 yard run by Villa put the Hawks in an early hole that would grow by another touchdown 6 minutes later and a Billie lead, 14-0 going into the 2nd period.
The Hawks would respond with a 62 yard drive that took 6 plays with help from Daulton Burt when he burst threw the line for a 52 yard run that missed being a touchdown by one yard. A Justin Abbott run up the middle drew some blood that would give a lift for the home team.
Fredericksburg was able to score before half leaving Canyon Lake down 14 points but with first dibs to open the 2nd half on offense.
Those last second touchdowns was the eventual downfall in this loss as each quarter had a Billie touchdown.
Third Quarter: 22 yard run with 0:06 left going into the second period.
Second Quarter: 7 yard pass with 0:12 left before halftime.
Third Quarter: 6 yard run with 0:49 left in that quarter.
Fourth Quarter: 24 yard pass with 0:14 left ending the game.
CL was not void of explosive plays in this comeback with the 52 yard run already mentioned by Burt that was joined with a Caden Rodriguez 50 yard run and 52 yard run for Billy Welty that had both of those runs during the 2nd half. Both jaunts were one play scoring drives.
The Lake was stopped on their 2nd time with the ball in the final half after a missed handoff that wasted a 3rd down play and leaving CL 12 yards short and in a punting situation.
Defense would be a welcome sight in staging the Hawk comeback when the defense halted a Bille drive that had Duncan Kelley corralling the Billie QB twice in slowing this Freddie offense and giving the Hawks a chance to tie the contest with right under 3 minutes remaining in the game.
“It was a make or break time of the game and when I saw their line take off then I just took after the quarterback,” Kelley said. “We will need to play better and work on those little things so our big stuff can happen.”
It was a close game which would have been an easy Hawk win comparing apples to apples (freshman to freshman).
Next week the Hawks will be on the road in Lampasas to continue their season in hopes having enough big stuff happening that will make those little things become a non-entity.
Go Hawks!!
