CL Hawks Took Care of Business in Win over Burnet, 28-16.

Center Ben Crisp waiting for reinforcements before the snap.

Canyon Lake cemented their 3rd seed in District 13-4A Division I game after using the 2nd half to come from behind and setting up their Bi-District contest next Friday against La Vernia.

Gordon the Plumber Says,  Go Hawks!

“We were just not playing our brand of football in that first half,” Head Coach Charley Drum started when asked what was the words that motivated the 2nd half avalanche. “We reminded the players of what they needed to do and they just responded….we could tell by their body language during the first half that they were just not engaged but they took care of business to start the 2nd half by having our defense force a punt before and then our offense took just one play for a score.”

Mistakes plagued Canyon Lake with their first two drives to start the game ending with fumbles that was sandwiched by a 21 yard field goal for Burnet.

CL only first half score was set up by the Hawk defense after holding the Bulldogs deep in their territory and a short punt had CL needing 25 yards to score and taking the lead.

Ryan Rivali started with a 14 yard play that was shortened by a Hawk penalty leaving CL needing 6 yards to continue their drive.

That was done by Shayne Moss and Jesse Horner who each had 3 carries a piece before a Horner 1 yard run for the touchdown.

Burnet would respond later in the 2nd period on a 20 yard pass play and lead going into intermission, 10-7.

Peyton McMullen’s ‘Houdini’ fake hand-off left all but one Bulldog to beat on a 54 yard touchdown run and Hawk advantage, 14-10.

                 Let’s Go Hawks!!

“I was just hoping I would not repeat the last time when I tripped,” McMullen said in retrospect. “I just kept my eyes on the end zone and finished the job.”

On how this team will need to take this next week of practice in preparing for La Vernia, “We want this win to carry over and take this momentum into the playoffs and just play Canyon Lake Football.”

Burnet would respond again going 67 yards on 10 plays to take the lead back, 16-14. Half of those plays for the Dogs being stalled on the Hawks 2 yard line. This drive had 8 Bulldog plays for 3 yards or less but it was a 54 yard run that turned out too much to keep the home team out of the end zone and having their last lead, 16-14.

That was when Canyon Lake had perfect sequences of good defense followed by an offensive score and that would carry, The Lake, to their 5th win this season and 3rd seed for their post-season.

Offense: A Shayne Moss 26 yard run did the trick for a lead that would stand, 21-16.

Corner Back Blayne Carnes has an interception to stop key play.

Defense: Next was a Blayne Carnes’ interception.

“I called my interception,” Carnes said like Nostradamus. “I jumped the ball and that was how our defense was called that allowed me to get a little closer.”

Offense: A Hawk score on a Horner one yarder that was helped when McMullen and Moss jump started this Canyon Lake drive with a 16 yard and 25 yard run respectfully.

Defense would finish off the Bulldogs when Brock Coburn sacked the quarterback with some help from his friends like Kolten Ramey’s tackle for a 6 yard loos on a Burnet pass play. Those plays helped solidify this finish with the victory formation and win, 28-16.

“We started slow and we realized we needed to pick it up,” Defensive End Ramey stated. “Their quarterback released the ball fast but on that sack, he (qb) was just bobbing and that gave me a free shot to go hit him.” (It was Coburn that had the QB’s legs allowing that free shot for Ramey)

“We will try to feed off our second half and just play our football,” Ramey closed.

Defemse: Defensive Back Hunter Anderson stopping a Bulldog after short catch forcing a turnover on downs.

Kolten Ramey and Hunter Anderson helped stave off a Bulldog rally.

“We rep taking on our offense on every single play,” Hunter Anderson said with confidence. “Working on that technique brought me to the football and hopefully winning this game will help us carry on this momentum into our playoff game.”

With those back to back to back defensive plays, CL would continue to show a better brand of defense that has come of age these last few weeks.

Now time to face off against an opponent that the Hawks have not faced since the 2013 season when La Vernia was a mainstay playing CL during those first 6 seasons of football.

The Bears will be the Bi-District foe and a chance of making to the Area round with a win.

Way to Go Hawks!!
