CL Hawks Left out in Cold after, 75-58 Loss to YMLA
Canyon Lake suffered their second set-back in a loss to the Young Mens Leadership Academy out of San Antonio on Tuesday night, 75-58.
“We have a bunch of really young guys and are just inexperienced,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We cannot assimilate the speed of the game in practice. The in game pace is different.”
The Hawks are fielding a young team as two starters from last year’s team continue their ‘other’ sport in football which has contributed to this slow start.
Those two Hawk Starters, Tyler Pauly and Peyton McMullen, were mentioned as top multi sport players during a count down, The ReSporter, had during the dog days of this past Summer.
What is seen with this present group of athletes is a high energy team with some glimmers of hope as more of the offense is instilled and those football reinforcements are able change uniforms. (not in a big hurry for that scenario)
In this game, The Lake, did have a bona-fide breakout from Senior Colton Winters as he exploded scoring 29 points or half of the final score.
Winters had a pretty good line-score after shooting 69% (9-14) from the floor, 83% from beyond the arc, and 100% from the charity stripe.
Winters’ 29 points compares to his scoring 28 points last year during an injury plagued campaign.

That is a group of all-star players from years gone by that Winters’ has entered.
“We just have to hope we can push the pace,” Winters said in stating the team’s new uptempo game plan. “I just try to read the defense and see what they are doing and try to be just a step ahead of them!”
That was certainly the case in this battle as Winters had 5 or more points in each period finishing with 10 points during that final stanza.
“We need to just play hard on defense but we did not do that in this game,” Winters said with a cold.
CL fought from behind through this whole contest and after falling behind by 31 points in that 3rd quarter the team did have a spurt to end the game and getting back to the final 17 point set-back, 75-58.
Another plethora of turnovers totalling 28 for the evening did not help in establishing any consistency and an eventual loss.
Canyon Lake will have a chance of getting some practices in before their next contest when Fox Tech will be at the Hawk Nest next Monday with tip-off at 11:00am.
