Hawk Boy’s ‘Free’ Throws Costly in Loss to Texans, 60-52
Whoever came up with the word ‘Free’ throw in basketball needs to come
back and have a do over on naming rights.
Canyon Lake Hawks could not cash in on the ‘Free’ throws when they needed too the most. A good free throw night would of been the difference maker in a game that saw the Hawks down as many as 13 points early in the first quarter.
In fact, the Hawks scored their first point on a free throw after the Texans had run up a 12-0 score in the first two minutes of the game.
Go back to an earlier game at the Canyon Lake Tournament and the same type of game transpired against Fredericksburg. That game was not pretty as the Hawks just dug themselves deeper and deeper after a similar start.
Against Wimberley, the Hawks were down 17-4 with four minutes left in the first quarter when the short handed Hawks started chipping away at what would’ve been an avalanche against the Billies earlier this season.
Canyon Lake outscored Wimberley, 13-7 to end the quarter putting them within striking range with a 24-17 score.
The Hawks continued their comeback in the second quarter, as Doug Hubnik and Matt Noyola played within themselves to bring the Texans out of their press.
Canyon Lake beat Wimberley 15-9 in the second quarter and now had a do over with the score, needing only one point going into the locker room with a tie at halftime.
Starting the second half, CL took their first lead on a Carl Cook to Ancel Morel shot and a 36-35 lead, two minutes into the third quarter.
The see/saw game had another beautiful pass from Brandon Berger to Kevin Nolan under the basket for a 38-37 lead with just three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
That however would be the last lead for the good guys as Wimberley pulled away for their final eight point victory.
The Bench for Canyon Lake played one of their better games this year.
Morel paced the bench with 11 of the 22 points scored from the energetic group of players.
“We had some guys step up,” Head Coach Matt Maynard reflected. “With (Matt)
Magness sick the players played harder than they have in the past.”
The stats for CL’s bench was impressive:
8 for 12 from the field for .667%
5 for 7 from the line for .714%
Add three blocks from Nolan and great hustle plays from the total bench effort resulted in a game not getting out of hand, which would of been over after the first three minutes of the first quarter.
The ReSporter has a new first name for Noyola…how about ‘Hustle’.
Hustle Noyola finished with 12 points with 4 assists and 4 steals in the game. Even Noyola’s two turnovers were nullified by his hustle back to the other side of the court where he was forcing turnovers to get the ball back.
Canyon Lake is 0-3 now in District play, but you can bet this team is not out of the race based on what they are bringing to the table.
“Were not out of any race,” Coach Maynard said. “It’s not who we play, it is about us.”
Don’t give up on the Hawks yet, there is still a lot of games to be played and this Hawk team seems to be just a couple of missed possessions and a nasty ‘Free’ throw here and there. Games will be having the opponent leaving the court with their heads down and dejected.
By the way, a Free Throw was introduced to the game of basketball in 1895 a mere four years after Basketball was founded by James Naismith.
Hopefully for the Hawks it won’t take that long for Canyon Lake to take advantage of this part of the game which is ‘Free’.
