Hawks can’t close in final minutes in loss to Luling after battling back from a 15 point deficit going into those final possessions, 78-73.

“Simply put we missed too many easy shots and free throws down the stretch,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman surmised. “There are obviously many other things that we need to improve upon, but basketball comes down to who makes more layups and free throws most of the time, and they did better than us night in that regard.”

Let’s Go Hawks and Hit’em Hard

Shooting 55% from the foul line in making 21 out of 38 tries and that 27% from the floor tells the story on this loss.

“I was proud of the way we continued to battle down the stretch. We were down 15 and cut it to a one possession game late,” Coach Chapman continued. “We show flashes of doing things really well, but we have too many possessions and stretches where things get away from us. We just have to be more consistent. The hope is the more reps we get, the more comfortable we are, which leads to more consistency.”

CL scored 4 points in the first 7 minutes in that 3rd period before the two buckets made in that final minute of the period. That inconsistency had the Hawks fighting to reduce a 15 point advantage (68-53) by the home team with 4:48 remaining in the game.

This was the first time two Hawks scored 20 or more points in the same game when Tyler Pauly (20 points) and Colton Winters (21 points) reached that mark. There have been 44 games with a Hawk player reaching that 20 point plateau and now two players did in the same contest.

Pauly continues his push in being the all-time assist leader after a 9 assist night that was the 3rd best in CL history. Pauly who reached 137 assists now trails Doug Hubnik (187) and Rico Griffin (156).

Those 9 assists accounted for 24 points and in scoring 20 points, Pauly was responsible for 44 of this game’s tallies.

              Let’s Go Hawks!!

“We just have to keep our heads up, stay positive, and compete every possession,” Coach Chapman closed. “We have to win more possessions, which leads to winning games.

Canyon Lake will have one more date before Christmas this Friday when Blanco comes calling for a 3pm tip-off for for the sub-varsity with the Varsity following.

Hopefully that consistency comes to the forefront as the winning starts against the Panthers.

Go Hawks!!
