Canyon Lake got a split against Wimberley last week and will have another two games this shortened week with Fredericksburg on the road in Freddie on Tuesday and then a Thursday first pitch at the Hawk Nest starting at 7:00pm.
The Billies have performed well the past couple of weeks with a big back to back wins against Benbrook scoring a 13-2 victory and Llano 8-2. Benbrook is ranked high with at 3rd in the THSB Poll and a Llano team that resides at the 3A level but still has several wins against other 4A schools.
CL does not have the history for taking any team for granted as the Hawks have an All-Time record of 4-21 against the Billies and has a 2-2 record after their first two years but then the wheels fell off the wagon with an 11 game losing streak after an 8-5 Hawk win in 2014. Then another 8 game losing streak before winning the first game of district in 2019. 6-4.
A sidebar during CL’s first two campaigns they won 3 of 4 Back-Bone Battles with Wimberley.
In the last two game series with our neighbors to the north, Canyon Lake had a good grade with pitching in giving up one earned run and the defense would grade a B with an error being a factor in that, 1-0 loss.
The Bats were scraping for scraps and finally found some scraps with some meat in scoring 2 runs in the win.
Freddie has used their bats well but have not had the pitching to garner a winning record after playing in tournaments which will favor teams with enough pitching to play 4 or 5 games in a 3 day period.
The Billies have lost or tied every game thus far if they do not get to 8 runs in a game. That should be a good omen for Canyon Lake. If Tanner Schultz and Tyler Pauly can be consistent in their next starts that would go a long way in winning two games this week.
Bats and Gloves can help in get the two wins giving the Hawks the motivation needed when they take on Boerne next week.
Wimberley will have two wins this week as they battle Bandera which is still waiting to pull off a win. That has been hard as these Bulldogs have lost every game but two by 10 or more runs.
Davenport and Boerne could have some surprises and that series still has to favor the Greyhounds.
Canyon Lake will see if they can make their all-time series 21-6 after this week.
Let’s GO HAWKS!!
