Hawk’s 5 Run Seventh Inning Results in a Win Over Boerne, 8-7
Final Score? Hawks Win and prepare for rematch this Friday at Boerne. Way to Go Hawks!!
Canyon Lake was able to improve their chances for a much needed sweep after a comeback for the ages in scoring 5 runs in the last inning to erase a 4 run advantage for the 4th Ranked Boerne, 8-7.

This win will now pit these same two combatants this Friday and if CL can pull off another upset then the top of District 28-4A will become a crowded field with 3 teams duking it out for that important 1st Seed in the playoffs.
“We had to change our strategy,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla stated. “I told the team that we would need to be more conservative and see more pitches because we needed base runners to win….we needed to find a way to keep it (inning) going. And when we were able to knock out their starter then we were able to play with them.”
On what this win means for this team? “This was a program win…they are a good team and to come back in 7 innings to win this ballgame showed that we never gave up.”
Boerne started the game with confidence when their first batter, Cam Johnson hit the first pitch for a double. That had CL’s starter Tanner Schultz rattled giving up two consecutive walks to load the bases and still waiting for that first out.
Schultz coming into this battle had given just one walk per game and within the first 3 batters was already over his quota.
That first out was a force play at home plate but a single and fielder’s choice with the next two Greyhound batters had a quick 2 run lead for the visitors.

The Lake started their half of the first with a Tyler Pauly double (Pauly finished with 3 two baggers and 4 rbi) and then Schultz worked a walk and with two runners in scoring position CL left them stranded and Boerne escaped without any damage.
BHS continued their next 3 innings scratching across runs with timely hits while CL squandered two more base runners in the 2nd and one in the 3rd and The Lake could not plug the hole in their water bottle as the desert was getting more desperate as this game continued and a deficit that looked ominous.
Reliever Peyton McMullen was called in to keep the game close in those last two frames which were both nail biters when the Greyhounds were still able to load the bases in both innings but scoring just one run.
“I needed to keep the ball down and that helped our guys to pull through,” McMullen recalled. “We believe in each other and we won’tt quit. This win will build confidence and everyone contributed…we have high expectations and we just have to go do what we do.”

The Lake was able to do what they do in outRunning Boerne in those last 3 innings, 8-1 after trailing by 6 runs going into the 5th inning.
That first run had Brayden Welch striking out but on a passed ball was able to make first base to start this frame. With two outs Hunter Anderson battled on an 8 pitch at bat for a free pass that was followed when Schultz and Griffen Williams both were walked forcing in Welch for the first Hawk run, 6-1.
A ground out was next leaving the bases full of Lakesters and no more damage.
CL struck again in the 6th inning with a lead off double by Gunnar Walker and after two strikeouts Dalton Stanley worked a walk that kept the inning going. With two outs Pauly cashed in on his second double driving in two runs that inched the Hawks within 3 runs to tie the game with one inning remaining.
Boerne was not finished tho and responded with an insurance run in their last inning that increased their lead to 4 runs and a steep hill for CL to climb trailing, 7-3.
Climb Canyon Lake did when Schultz was able to leg out an infield single that was followed with 2 batters being hit by pitch and a single.
Matt McLain drove in Schultz when he was hit by pitch before a Greene pop out to short right field that was unable to drive in a run.
With CL still needing 3 runs to tie the score and the bases still loaded. Welch started his at bat in a 2 strike hole but battled to stay alive with a walk to drive in another run, 7-5.
A Dalton Stanley 9 pitch at bat and eventual walk had Canyon Lake needing 2 runs to win their first game ever against these Greyhounds. That was when Pauly pulled a ball down the first base line for his 3rd double that drove in two runs for another walk-off win for the Hawks.
When told that this was Canyon Lake’s first ever win over Boerne, Pauly said, “Bout time!”’

Pauly continued, “We had so many opportunities and not able to come away with anything. But it was different when we got to their relievers.”
On what this means for CL’s program, “This was huge for how hard our people work for this program, being down, 7-3 in the bottom of the 7th meant we had to be on it!”
Pauly was certainly on it and has now passed Logan Felch who held the most rbi with 19 in a season and with 4 rbi for this game, Pauly now stands with 22 while matching his 26 hits in a season during his Sophomore year. With 6 more hits then Pauly can take that trophy too over Brandon Robinson and Michael Brady who each had a 31 hit campaign back in the day.
The 8 Hawk runs were the most scored against Boerne this season and for a game that started with so many missed opportunities the ending was just the opposite as CL took advantage of the Greyhounds pitching to win an improbable game with another rematch this Friday in Boerne town.
This victory raised CL’s winning percentage from .000 to .045 and a sweep would have The Lake with a win percentage up to an astronomical .086 and a chance to control their destiny finishing the season with a sweep while hoping Boerne could get a win over Wimberley later this month.
That would result in the Hawks as a first seed in the post-season. By beating a 4th ranked opponent made this conquest the best for Hawk Baseball and now one more, go at it, at the Greyhound race track.
With this 17th win (a new Hawk first) campaign has this year’s group with a chance of continuing to add to that total with 7 games remaining in this season and being 9 games over .500 would need one more to match last years best.

Wimberley held on to beat Freddie, 5-3 which now has the Texan’s tied with Boerne in first place. Davenport did what every other team has done to Bandera with a 10 run win that has the Wolves tied with Freddie for 4th place.
Canyon Lake now holds down 3rd place all alone and a chance to move into 2nd or tied for first with Boerne and Wimbo with a win or tied with Davenport in 3rd place.
