CL Hawk Volleyball Starts Season vs. Clemens & Liberty Hill

Canyon Lake Hawk’s last pep talk before season starts in loss to Schertz Clemens.

The CL Hawk Volleyball season got underway against two heavyweight programs that started at 10am with Canyon Lake pitted against Schertz Clemens.

The Lake is coming off their first losing season in 7 years and just missed the playoffs after a one game play-in contest with Fredericksburg.

                      Let’s Go Hawks!!

CL has a lot of returning players and had a decent day in their losses to 6A-Clemens and 5A-Liberty Hill.

In the first match with Clemens, Canyon Lake, could not finish in two sets after leading in both after a comeback in a 26-24 loss and a third set loss 20-25. That last set had the Home Team up, 19-16 before a Clemens 9-1 run that clinched the set and game.

Against Liberty Hill, the Hawks started slow in their first two sets and were only able to close the gap to a 4 point deficit, 12-16 before a Panther, 9-2 finish and win.

The Hawks did finish strong in that deciding set by rallying from 10 points down, 9-19 while closing the gap to, 20-23 before LH finished scoring the next two points. It was another close loss against an always tough Panther team.

“We just need to compete and up our speed in our matches,” Head Coach Kim Clemons stated. “We will keep raising the bar and gauge ourselves as the season continues and we should do well in district.”

Coach Clemons (not related to the opponent) continued, “Consistency starts with that first pass and it will take some more discipline and focus in order to reach our goals this season.”

                    Way to Go Hawks!!

Emily Pena (3) and Hannah Harrison (2) led the Hawks with aces and Macie Goodson (3) and Addyson Andrews (2) led the team in blocks.

Pena had 30 assists and 26 digs that was totaled in those two opening contests for the year.

Outside Hitter Olivia Robinson finished with 14 kills which was the Hawk high mark in that category.

“We learned confidence and look to improve on our record from last year,” Robinson said in response to opening the season against two powerhouses. “We competed and did not let them beat us badly, we just need to learn how to play with each other with more games.”

On how much better the team played during the latter stages on the Hawks last game with LH, “We decided to pick it up and run a quicker offensef…and playing teams like this will help show us what we need to do.”

Robinson closed on playing in the Tex-Fest starting Friday, “We will need to keep the energy and learn to get ahead earlier in a match and continue to work hard.”

Tex-Fest will start with 3 games on Friday at 9am against Needville another tough opponent but hopefully starting and staying in these contest’s today will help give CL a better chance as the tournament approaches.
