Alamo Heights’ 3rd Quarter 17 Point Blitz Proved Too Much for Hawks

Canyon Lake can’t keep up in 2nd half in loss to Alamo Heights.

Alamo Heights used a 3rd Quarter blitz, scoring 17 points, that proved the difference in the Hawks loss, 38-21.

The first half had the Heights starting strong and then a Canyon Lake answering to tie the game during that 2nd quarter.

Turnovers played a key role in The Lake’s loss after a fumble on the Alamo Heights’ one yard line that doused a chance for a go ahead score during the 2nd period. Then, a Hawk fumble on the second half kick-off proved enough for the Heights to continue their undefeated season (4-0) in class 5A-Division II.

An interference call for Canyon Lake nullified an interception in the end zone which was another pivotal mistake that kept piling up in those last 30 minutes of play.

Too many blunders took their toll and an eventual loss for Canyon Lake (2-2) as they go into next week’s game against the always tough Blanco Panthers on Homecoming night.

Canyon Lake’s defense was able to hold The Heights to a field goal after that kick-off fumble but the Hawk’s offense followed with their next possession with a 3 play and punt sequence and the Mules would stubbornly continue their onslaught of scoring 24 points before a Hawk response.

The Hawks were able to strike on their last drive when seldom used (as a running back) Brock Coburn darted around the right side of the line untouched until a Mule’s attempt to push Coburn out of bounds inside the 10 yard line. But Coburn used a nifty tight rope act for his 55 yard touchdown that brought the ending on this night losing, 38-21. It was Coburn’s only run this season.

CL’s offense continues to struggle especially coming out of their halftime as opposing teams seem to be able to clamp down defensively.

A slot-t is noted for being a ball control grind it out offense with a few break-out plays thrown in to make it interesting.

                        Let’s Go Hawks!!

There are a couple of tendencies for this offense and one is accumulating first downs. Thus far this season, The Lake, has not reached the 20 first down threshold for a game. During the slot-t era this is the longest drought in this category which many times can be covered up with more explosive plays.

Canyon Lake is 26-10 when reaching 20 or more first downs since the slot-t was installed for a 72% winning percentage.

That (explosive plays) has not been seen yet especially in the passing game. The lull a defense to sleep with constant rushing plays will many times give CL’s offense those long receiving stats which have not been realized.

Last week’s 67 yard touchdown pass for Chase Anderson has been the longest reception with the next longest going for 17 yards. Both of these instances play in tandem as a ball control first down grabber offense will tend to lead to those longer explosive plays.

One last trend that will need to be improved upon is scoring to start the 2nd half. Canyon Lake has been outscored, 30-7 during the 3rd quarter which has seen the opponents adjustments after halftime be enough for taking control a game.

Blanco will be next up for Canyon Lake’s Homecoming this Friday and the Panthers (1-3) will be bringing an always tough battle for a school that is more than half CL’s size but these Panthers circle this game on their calendar each year for a chance to knock off their neighbor.

A tough pre-district schedule will hopefully lead to a productive district slate that starts in a little less than 3 weeks.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
