Hawk’s Sub-Varsities have Good Final Scrimmages
SUB-VARSITIES SCRIMMAGE RECAP
Canyon Lake’s two Sub-Varsity teams had a much better go at it this week after seeing the Junior Varsity controlling both sides of the line.
Defensively, Matthew Elson and Ryder Hopper were two players that had some highlight plays.
“We got better and our defensive line was able to get past them and we just blew them up,” Elson said while blowing out his birthday candles. “Our goal was to get our offense back and we did better there too.”
Ryder Hopper batted a pass attempt and recorded at least two sacks on the defensive side of the ball as well quarterbacking some nice passes for yardage and touchdowns.
“Because I play quarterback..I don’t have a lot of chances to play defense so when they let me play I want to play physical and we just balled out!!, Hopper said with pizzazz. “I could tell I was faster than their lineman so I got by him pretty easy.”
On this scrimmage compared to last week and thoughts on next week’s game against the Texans, “We just had a better mind-set and we locked in and were able to do what we wanted to do…On Wimberley? They won’t want the smoke!”
Hope that confidence carries over to start the season well as a major part of these player’s on the JV were late in responding during last year’s set-back (16-20) against Wimberley. That game had the Texans with a large lead before that (at the time) Freshman team could make it a game.
This year’s Canyon Lake Freshman will have a chance to continue their success enjoyed during the Mountain Valley Middle School stint.
This will be a deep group that will form two freshman teams in order to get all the players some significant chances to improve their football IQ with live action.
A scrimmage that started these Hawks taking 5 plays for a score on their opening series of downs. Yes, there were some ups and downs but a key was seeing more ups especially as the scrimmage got into those later stages.
That depth helped with fresher legs as the action drew to a close.
Jace Morales was busy on both sides of the ball with a good ground game offensively, “We wanted to do better and everybody would set the tone and we were a better team this week,” Morales said like a statesman. “But we will have to step it up and take no part of our game off against Wimberley. Tonight we were more physical in our win!”
Mountain Valley Football is pitted against larger Middle Schools in Comal County which should have several of those outfits with some salty players. MVMS was able to rule the roost last season with both, A & B teams which will be a good sign for another wave of players that have a chance of raising the bar.
Silas Turner was another player, The ReSporter caught up with who played a lot in Elgin’s backfield during this scrimmage, “We had good footwork and toughness, but we have plenty of work to do! Adrenalin helped me on my last tackle (for a 5 yard loss) and I just wanted to hit!!”
On this week’s preparation for Wimberley? “We’ll have to be the tougher team!”
Should be three good battles upcoming this week with the SubVarsities kicking off in Wimbo this Thursday and the Texan’s Varsity coming on the South Side of the Devil’s Back-Bone for varsity battle!!
GO HAWKS!!
