CL Hawk’s Little Things Turn into Big Wins Beating Burnet, 28-14

Canyon Lake’s second half continued to shine as the Hawk’s win over Burnet coupled with a Lampasas loss had CL atop District 13-4A standings.

The Lake is now down to two remaining games, that with wins, will secure a championship and first seed entering the post-season.
It was the 2nd half that has these Hawks scoring 50 points while giving up just two touchdowns through those first 3 district battles.
Burnet was the best defensive unit thus far against district foes and these Bulldogs had held CL to 150 yards of offense in those first two quarters and CLHS had a tying TD with only 6 seconds left before halftime, 14-14.
That drive was a two play 62 yarder that had two explosive plays when James Garza broke into the open through the line and was caught 38 yards later at the Burnet 24 yard line. Then QB Hunter Anderson’s strike to Helijah Johnson in the end-zone on the next play would tie it up at 14 all.
There have been story lines these past 3 years, as it has been documented, on how Canyon Lake’s 4th quarter (3 years ago) was dismal for scoring points and losing leads.
Then last season that 3rd quarter took on those same characteristics and as the Hawk Nation has seen a problem in securing a fast start to open the games this campaign.

Now Canyon Lake has supplanted those last two quarters into a Hawk positive with a, 50-14 point advantage in district play. In fact, the Hawk’s advantage is a lofty, 91-35 difference when you add that 2nd quarter into that formula.
These last two contests, the Hawks have brought their first quarter deficits to a more manageable, 17-21 score or only trailing by 4 points. Hence standing in first place and the only remaining undefeated district school.
Now a Hawk 4 game winning streak after starting the season losing those first 3 games has The Lake starting to find an identity on the offense and defensive side of the ball.
Case and point was during the second half when CLHS was threatening for a score on Burnet’s 7 yard line and needing to convert a 4th and 2 but was left short by a yard.
Way to go Hawks!!
It was then that Burnet unleashed an 88 yard bomb resulting in a first and goal on the Hawk’s 6 yard line late in the 3rd quarter. The Hawk defense held Burnet to a one yard loss on their first two downs and then on their 4th down try was left short at the one.
A close call but the Hawk defense made a statement and gave CL’s offense a slot-t answer using 99 yards of real estate on a 15 play drive and CL 14 point lead halfway into that final quarter, 28-14.
Burnet final possession was cemented when Trevin Cutrer (The ReSporter will hence start calling this player, FLASH) was on the Bulldog’s QB like a June Bug is on a Peach for a 9 yard loss resulting in Burnet’s only option by punting.
From there, Canyon Lake would run their plays while running the clock for their third district win.
There were several moments that had highlight reel accolades:
Helijah Johnson’s 31 yard catch down the sideline when the Bulldog’s defensive back had his hands on the ball but saw it snatched from a much larger player (to say the least).
“All I have to say is weight room,” Johnson said in response to that catch. “It felt good…it was a nice catch.”

The Flash moment when Cutrer was as quick as lightening in getting to the QB, “They sent me on the line and without Carson Reinarz taking those two edges off then I couldn’t have done it and as soon as he did it and saw that gap open up and the QB’s back was turned to me..I went for it and ran as fast as I could.”
Cutrer wasn’t finished as he talked bout his tackle, “When he (QB) started to run I went for him and I wrapped up and kept running through him and made sure he did not get away from me.”
Another huge find this year has been kicker Jayden Van Ausdall who was needed when Senior Ethan Schedlbauer was hurt and as this season has progressed CL has seen a kicker that looks more confident and has become an automatic with each passing week.
Those little things win championships and hopefully there will be more little things during these next two weeks.
Canyon Lake will taking on Taylor at home this week as this will be Senior Night and the last home game for this large group of players that are on track for reaching the 2nd district championship for The Lake by taking care of business in these next two weeks.
