The Pass was all that was needed for an improbable comeback win for the CL Green Freshman team that was able to drive 70 yards in 58 seconds to retake the lead leaving 11 seconds on the clock.

               Let’s GO HAWKS!!

More on that last play later in a game that everything went wrong to start this game when the Lampasas Badgers came out of the chute scoring on a 2 play 60 yard drive for their running back who was able to make the edge to find smooth sailing to the end-zone and quick lead, 7-0.

The Lake responded with a lost fumble on their second play that had these Badgers ready for another quick score. This time a first play 30 yard pass that left just 3 yards to reach pay-dirt for their second score and a, 14-0 advantage with only 3 minutes into this battle.

After spotting their opponent 14 points these Hawks would use an 11 play drive that had two explosive plays coming from Jace Morales for 15 and 26 yards and that last run would give CL their first score, 7-14.

Lampasas was not deterred using a 48 yard pass play that would set-up a 26 yard field goal and 10 point lead, 17-7 two minutes into that 2nd period.

CL Freshman would get some help from the Badgers on a botched onside kick leaving the Hawks needing 41 yards to close the gap.

                      Way to Go Hawks!!

Close,  Canyon Lake did using 6 plays for an Eli Hammons 4 yarder but a bad snap on the extra point try had Morales taking things (the ball) into his own hands and scooted to the right pile-on that closed this into a 2 point deficit, 17-15.

Lampasas was finally stopped on their next drive that was punctuated by a Kahle Bowers blitzed resulting in a 5 yard loss and the seeing two Badger incompletion that closed out the half on CL’s 6 yard line. This was the only time CL’s defense was able to get a stop that did not require a clock declaring the end of game.

The Hawks would start the 2nd half with a classic slot-t 79 yard drive taking 11 plays that had Hammons scoring twice….on a 5 yard bruising run that was brought back because a 10 yard holding penalty. Using that same play resulted this time in a Hammons 15 yard score and CL’s first lead, 21-17. This drive left 3 minutes on that 3rd quarter clock.

The Lamps would continue their offensive offense with help from an interference call in the end zone and needing 2 yards that retook this game’s see-saw lead, 24-21 Badgers.

                     Way to go Hawks!!

With still one quarter remaining, The Hawks used a Hammons 32 yard run to the Badger’s 7 yard line and 3 plays later it was all money when Cash Ziemba (who finished with 95 yards rushing) crashed the line from one yard out putting CL back into a lead, 27-21 with right at 5 minutes in the 4th period.

Lampasas had been lethal on this night and would rumble down the field for what would seem to be a clinching touchdown leaving :58 seconds on the clock, 31-27 lead. This is usually a death toll for a slot-t offense that uses the forward pass when you need to break the emergency glass in case of a fire.

Canyon Lake, up to this point, had not thrown a (forward) pass and started their last ditch drive 70 yards from the goal line.

After 4 more rushing plays that had gone for 14 yards and 20 seconds to play, the Hawks would finally unleash their secret weapon (a forward pass) that had these Badger’s defensive backs lulled to sleep while Morales waiting for THE (ONE) PASS which would result in a score that won this game, 33-31.

Chase Ellis, Eli Hammons, Jace Morales & Jordan Scheppler afer a great comeback!!

On when Coach Kyle Hejniicki might pass, “I thought about it but I tried the run because it had been successful. Plus we still had 3 timeouts and I knew we could not get all that yardage in one play.”

So, to recap, you can’t get it all on one play when a team is 70 yards from the goal line but you can get it all on one play when you are 56 yards from a score!

All you have to have is, THE PASS!!

Congrats Hawks on a great way to end this season…looking forward to next year!!

Go Hawks!!
