Canyon Lake has surprising tie against Smithson Valley
Canyon Lake tied Smithson Valley, 1-1, last Friday and now find themselves with a legitimate chance of making some noise in district play. The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Jeff Vaughn for some insight to that game and how the season is unfolding.
The ReSporter: “Congratulations on the game with Smithson Valley this past Friday…
Coach Vaughn: “Thanks. All the credit goes to the girls as I just stand on the sidelines and give orders and move the pieces around. The heart shown by the girls is how we were able to get the much needed tie.”
The ReSporter: “What did you do offensively after SV scored in order to score the tying goal?
Coach Vaughn: “After they scored, I pulled Annie Jacobs from the goal and put Wynne Clark in goal. I put Annie in as stopper and pushed Mia Hernandez up with Christie Fowler. We were pressuring around their 18 yard box when a foul occurred. None other than Danielle Carpenter stepped up and placed the shot over the keeper and in the side netting! The rest is history…we only had two shots on goal and one went in. Not the prettiest of ties but lets be honest…who cares…it’s still a tie that goes in the books.”
The ReSporter: “You moved Carpenter to sweeper for part of the game…did you accomplish your goal with this move?”
Coach Vaughn: “I put Carpenter as sweeper the whole game because I need her speed at the back! With all of our injuries, I needed some speed and experience at the sweeper position! This might hurt our offense a bit, but if we limit the shots taken by other teams we have a chance to tie or win…the loss gets taken out of the equation!”
The ReSporter: “What does a game like this do for Canyon Lake?”
Coach Vaughn: “Not sure. I know that the girls felt great Friday night and so did I. Hopefully this gives us a level of confidence we need to play and compete in our tough district!”
The ReSporter: “How do you get the Hawks to play with this same intensity for the other teams in district play?”
Coach Vaughn: “If I only knew the answer to this!!! All I can do is ask them to keep up the intensity and give them credit when credit is due. Friday they deserved all the credit in that tie, and I give them all the praises for their accomplishment.”
The ReSporter: “What are your expectations as the round robin district contests continue?”
Coach Vaughn: “Expectations are still the same…one game at a time! We knew that we had to win one game in the first round and squeak out another win or two ties. We are one step closer to that goal and face Canyon, Dripping Springs and Wimberley the next three games. We need at least a win to stay with the competition but really need another tie also! We will see how it all unfolds for us!”
