Football New Book First Chapter Friday Scrimmage Burnet
Canyon Lake has added newness to this year after former Coach Charley Drum departed after last season.
Now, Sam Parker has taken the reigns as the 3rd Football Coach in CL’s history. Coach Parker answered the call this past February arriving from Tomball Memorial from the Houston area.
With this hire the 10 year old slot-t offense was shelved for more open offense that uses both run and passes being used based on game situations and where The Lake’s strengths might excel based on team being played and that squad’s defense weakness.
Pretty simple assessment when brought down for how a said team can put their schemes for a possible win based using a more balanced attack.
Last year’s Hawk team suffered with their worst defense since that first Lake campaign in 2008 that finished with one win while their defense surrendered 47 points per outing. Canyon Lake had 2 wins last season and gave up 50 points per contest.
The Lake reached 52 points in those 2 victories but could not find the end zone enough to pull off more victories.
With new coaches there comes a new way to define success, “I don’t measure a successful season by winning a district championship,” Head Coach Sam Parker opined. “Success comes by how far you go in the playoffs and reaching the state game to get a championship.”
That statement was made after The ReSporter asked Coach Parker bout how forcing turnovers helped Canyon Lake during two district championship seasons.
“Turnovers and explosive plays are what I use to quantify as things we would need to improve on,” Parker continued. “Nine out of 10 turnovers are a result of getting as many hats on the ball as you can…that’s when you have to take chances.”
“Our defense was exceptional and they played with confidence,” Parker parked when talking bout last weekends intra squad scrimmage. “We played fast but our learning curve is a mountain.”
On what the coaches will be looking for as the two scrimmages commence the next two Fridays, “Every scrimmage we will answer questions….what questions we need to see on offense with personel and scheme and when those questions are answered then we are done….we are still 0-0 after these scrimmages.”
“We will be making sure we are prepared ultimately for district season…we will figure out our best 11 on the field and finding that best combination and finding depth to sustain that,” Coach Parker said.
“Defense does not have as much schemes,” Coach Parker said reacting to last intra squad contest that had the ‘D’ dominating. This Friday night we will focus on getting better playing someone besides ourselves and then study our video…. seeing how our team can rely on each other will be a key.”
There is a lot of excitement with almost all of the reserved seats sold out and The Lake anticipates the opening of the season when Wimberley crosses the Devil’s Back-Bone.
But until then Canyon Lake will entertain Burnet this Friday with the Freshman and Junior Varsity starting at 5:00pm and then Varsity taking the field 6:30pm.
San Antonio Central Catholic will be at the Hawk Nest August 23rd with the Sub-Varsity starting at 5:30pm and then Varsity final dress rehearsal 7:00pm.
