Defense Carries The Lake over Navarro, 48-35
Canyon Lake got their 2nd district win after disposing the Navarro Panthers by taking the lead off the tip which was not relinquished for the remainder of this contest.
Seven Hawks scored 5 or more points that kept the pressure on the Visitors by outscoring the Panthers 29-21 during that 2nd half.
“Last night was one of those games where we struggled to finish around the basket,” Head Coach Monte Cole stated. “Defensively we were pretty good and that’s what ultimately allowed us to win. Scored some off our defense in the 2nd half to push the lead up enough.”
That 8 point first quarter lead was challenged by Navarro when they closed that gap by 3 points going into halftime.
Then, by adding a 6 points to that lead to open the 3rd quarter being helped by the Hawk defense.
On how The Lake has shown improvement across the board when compared to last season’s team, “We are shooting about the same but I think we’re playing a little faster so we’re getting more possessions and so our scoring is up,” Coach Cole explained.
More possessions becomes paramount as this year’s team has reduced their turnovers per game which puts an exclamation point on those extra possessions.
Canyon Lake will be at Davenport which presently who has a sparkling, 21-4 record thus far and are tied with the Hawks for first place in district play.
“Should be a fun game on Friday,” Cole closed. “They do a great job with their pressure and making you have to work to bring the ball up the court. We’ll work on a plan and limiting turnovers will be a big part of what the result ends up.”
This game had Carter Williams hit 200 steals and now has added Blocks to his No. 1 resume with 97 for his career.
Way to Go Carter & Let’s Go Lake!!
