CL Hawks Fly over the Fence in Wimberley Win, 5-3
The Hawks flew over the fence with a homerun ball off the bat of Logan Felch scoring Quinn Pike and sending the Wimberley Texans home for the long weekend.
Canyon Lake had fought from behind until the lead was reclaimed in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Daniel Camarillo laced his third hit of the evening knocking in the go ahead run (at the time) for a 3-2 lead.
“I have a good mind set of going up swinging,” sophomore Camarillo said. “This game gives us a good spirit so we can make this a habit.”
When asked about how he approaches each game, Camarillo said,”Before each game I abuse the bat, by hitting it with the ball…..it helps give me more focus.”
In Daniel’s case, it also gives him a chance to let his bat take the last swing, abusing the ball.
The lead was short lived as the Texans loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, loading the bases scoring their run after a diving Camarillo just missed the flair shot to left field.
The Hawks escaped more damage in the inning as pitcher Zach Jenkins gunned down a Texan trying to advance to second off a bunted ball.
“Zach (Jenkins) fields the ball so well off the mound,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “He also got better at pitching as the game went on.”
The CLHS win was the fifth win in a row for the Hawks over their close friends from the North in District play. The Hawks started district play in similar fashion last year. The year that finished with the first CL team to win in the playoffs.
Zach Jenkins was on the mound and pitched a masterful game. Jenkins threw 108 pitches and if not for the one homerun pitch, the Senior pitcher would of been working on a shut out. He finished with 10 strikeouts for the game walking only three Texans.

After the slow start in the first inning, where Jenkins had two of his three walks for the game, his curve ball started working, leaving the Texans frozen in the batting box watching the ball find the catcher’s mitt or swinging aimlessly for contact. Six of the 10 strikeouts caught the Texans listening to the Ump call them out….just looking.
“I like working the curve ball to the right handed hitters,” Winning Pitcher Jenkins said. “We just played baseball and everybody focused and did not let the fielding errors get us down.”
The seventh inning allowed the Hawks to put into practice all of the games against the harder competition this season, and funnel that knowledge and experience into a victory.

“I was just thinking, I needed to do my job,” a starry eyed Felch said. “I’m usually batting in the five hole, and tonight I was batting clean up.”
“I dream about doing this (winning homerun) all the time,” Felch continued. “It felt like I got all of it!”
Coach Dunavant finished, “This gives us confidence……this is the way we did it last year.”
Last year finished in the playoffs and that was no ‘dream’….now the Hawks need to keep flying and hope for the same result.
