Baseball: Canyon Lake lose, 9-7 to the Billies

The Canyon Lake Hawks are 0 for 3 in District 26-3A play, but by watching this

team compete you will realize that it is just a matter of time for CL to break into the win column and start competing for a playoff spot.

Fredericksburg started with a bang, scoring four runs in the first inning that was highlighted by a three run homerun off the bat of Jacob Smith. The inning was elongated by an error, having the Hawks continuing on the abnormal amount of runs scored with two outs.

“We keep grasping at straws because we have so many youth issues,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant lead off. “We hit the ball better, we spent two days on it.”

Canyon Lake responded in the bottom of the first when Freshman Garrett Winters drew a one out walk, Travis Walker singled scoring Winters after advancing on an error earlier when Eckert tried to catch Winters off of first base.

Fredericksburg scored another unearned run in the top of the second after two outs, when Daniel Camarillo misplayed a ball in center field and the Billies’ runner scored on a passed ball later that inning.

The Hawks scratched two one run innings in the middle of the contest.

In the fourth inning Michael Brady took one for the team after getting hit by the pitcher. Dominic Theisz pinch ran and scored on a fielders choice.

Walker led off the next inning when he got a ball up into the jet stream and sent it over the left field fence.

“He gave me a belt high fast ball earlier,” Walker said sizing up the question. “The first one I saw I got to unload on and I got it out.”

The middle innings were also highlighted by some nifty throwing when Brady caught Dillon Reeh trying to steal in the third inning, then in the fourth Brady came to the rescue again when he caught Jacob Smith loitering off of first base.

“Throwing base runners out is always a good thing,” Brady said.

The series of plays helped the Hawks Pitcher Cody Powell since both base runners were issued first base by a walk and hit by pitch.

With the Hawks down by two runs, the Billies answered the bell scoring four runs in the top of the sixth ballooning their lead to six runs. Once again Canyon Lake had two outs on their visitor during the scoring spree.

This trend was similar to the Wimberley game earlier this week. All of Fredericksburg’s  runs were scored after the Hawks had recorded the second out of the inning.

“We’ve got  to stop getting the runners on,” First baseman Walker said. “We will come back on Monday and get ready to work….we are almost there.”

Canyon Lake showed maturity once again by nullifying the Fredericksburg four spot and matched that same amount of runs in the bottom of the stanza.

Brady was the rally starter with a single to start the frame. Kyler Huff then walked and Colton Krawietz had a pinch hit walk loading the bases.

“There is a lot of bright spots,” Catcher Brady started. “We are hitting a lot better, I feel more comfortable at the plate, and I have seen the pitchers, which gives me more confidence and I can wait for it (the right pitch), the game slows down.”

After a close play at the plate when Theisz tried to score on a passed ball, the Hawks still had enough gas in their tank to score four runs.

Daniel Camarillo singled scoring a run, and then Walker got hit by a pitch to load the bases again.

Logan Felch who had been on a mini slump then stepped up to the plate and drew two balls that had the Billies Manager out of the dugout to change pitchers.

After a first strike, Felch had a hitters pitch to the right field gap to clear the bases giving the Hawks an equalizing inning.

Walker took the mound in the seventh and made quick order of the Billies to give the Home Team one last try to pull out the contest.

“Travis Walker is going to give you every chance to win,” Coach Dunavant said. “This is a guy you would want in a fox hole, he will have your back.”

With one out, Brady once again drew a walk, but could not get any further as  the next two Hawks were rung up by some 90 mile per hour heat.

Yes, the Hawks are 0-3 in District 26-3A play. But the youth on this team is growing up fast and with the district having three game series instead of two like in years past, Canyon Lake certainly can right the ship and make this an interesting season.

The Hawks next game will also be at home against Navarro on Tuesday, March 20th.
The game starts at 7:00 pm, come and watch this exciting team beat the odds and a Panther.
