Softball: Hawks Run Over Greyhounds, 14-4
The Canyon Lake Hawks have started their District 26-3A race by running over the
Boerne Greyhounds last Wednesday, 14-4 in the shortened run ruled game.
“I think we were ready to play and came out aggressive offensively,” Head Coach John Gallagher started. “We just got to keep working and plugging.”
The lineup looks like it might be set for most of the games for the remainder of the season.
McKenna Beseda started the game in left field, which allowed Kelsey Ahrens to take third base and moving Lilimae Dailey to first. A position she played last year.
“Beseda is good out there,” Coach Gallagher surmised. “Her speed is an asset. Now with (Mary) Jordan at centerfield we can play quick….but this will all be based on who we play.”
Missy Romero was dominant from the circle and held Boerne to two hits in the contest.
Boerne helped the Hawks cause with seven errors, which allowed the Hawks long innings and 12 runs to start the contest.
In the first inning, Canyon Lake had the fewest runs you can score by batting around the lineup.
Three runs, three outs, and three baserunners left stranded on the base paths.
Power is a phase you can use for this contest. CL had five doubles, two of them off the bat of Freshman Kelsey Ahrens.
Ahrens also contributed four rbi’s to help the Hawk’s cause. That might also explain why she was hit by a pitch…their pitcher did not want to see another ball go to the outfield.
“Pretty exciting going out there, it gave me a rush,” Thirdbaseman Ahrens said. “This was an amazing win and it helps us build for the playoffs.”
A statement that was not thought of as this was one of the CL sports that started late on the going to the playoff banter.
Pitching was strong with 10 strikeouts from Romero.
“She (Romero) is always there,” Ahrens said in commenting on what Romero means for this team in the circle. “She is a great athlete and she gives our defense confidence, and the defense will have her back.”
Coach John Gallagher got to empty the dugout as the game grew old, giving several players a chance to get acclimated to district play.
With only two Seniors on this club, it always good for the opportunity to share in a win for all the players.
The trinity was evident in the dominance of our neighbors to the west.
Defense? √ with only two errors, that is a number this team can take to the next level.
Offense? √ with five doubles out of the eight hits will also allow this team a chance for big innings.
Pitching? √ four runs with all the runs scored in the last inning was not vintage Romero, but sometimes the offense gets to help out pitching. (which is a good thing)
Misc.? √ 11 walks! A walk is as good as a hit especially when it puts pressure on the opposing team’s defense. The OBP (on base percentage) was astronomical. .583 percentage. The Coaches can live with that.
This game needed to be won exactly the way it transpired.
Why? Bandera is next and that game is on the road Friday night.
Bandera beat the Hawks twice last year in two nail biters.
“Payback, we are ready,” Senior pitcher Missy Romero said with resolve.
Now Canyon Lake will need to ‘run’ over to Bandera and see if this Bulldog wants to play.
