Lady Hawks taking care of Business, Win 12-5

The Hawks scored some much needed runs in their win over San Angelo Central last Friday at the Canyon Lake Softball field.
The Hawks were running on a streak of not having more than two runs in the previous three games and responded with a break our inning, scoring five runs in the first.
The inning started with a walk to Alex Henderson and after an unsuccessful bunt attempt, Missy Romero walked giving Katy Payne and Megan Browning a chance to get the first two hits and keep the pressure on the Central Bobcats.
Enter the hitting hero for the Hawks, McKenna Beseda. Beseda had totaled seven hits for the whole season up to this break out game when she got a double off the glove of the third baseman scoring two runs and staking the Hawks to a five run inning. The hit came with two outs and chased the starting pitcher for the ‘Cats.
“I have been working on hitting all week,” Third baseman Beseda said. “It started to kick in and everything I had been working on started to work.”
‘Work’ is an understatement for the sophomore player who finished the game with four hits and another double. The hits also resulted in four runs batted in and causing a celebration of joy as you followed Beseda to second base and watching her pump her fist in the air.
The sixth inning, the Hawks had allowed the Bobcats to inch within three runs of tying the score. The first eight players reached base, including Beseda’s second double of the game, scoring the final two runs of the sixth run inning.
The sixth inning had four hits, a walk, a runner reach base on an error and a fielder’s choice. The score was now safely in the favor of the home team 12-3.
Central scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to bring the final tally to, 12-5.
Second Baseman Alex Henderson
The Hawks relied on their defense again as pitcher Missy Romero’s strikeout pitch took a hiatus for the day.
The good news? The Hawks played good defense and did not open the flood gates with errors.
Senior Alex Henderson also came to bat in the final inning needing a hit to continue her nine game hitting streak. She responded with a soft liner over the head of the short stop to keep the streak alive at 10 games.
“I keep getting more comfortable,” hitting guru Henderson said. “With each at bat I’m getting more confidence.”
Henderson continued, “I like batting first in the lineup, it’s different. I feel the team has more confidence in ourselves.”
The Hawks needed a win after a couple of losses over very winnable teams the past couple of weeks.
“This was good competition and it was also a confidence builder,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “The game got close and we got what we needed…the defense held us together.”
The Hawks will be playing at Navarro this coming Tuesday and then will be at home next Friday against Boerne, with the game starting at 6pm.
