Jake Robinson is Special

Defensive Back and Kicker Jake Robinson

Canyon Lake had the right man for the job last year when kicking was part of the defensive Back and Kicker Jake Robinson game. Jake Robinson only missed two extra points last season while kicking two field goals for a team that averaged five touchdowns per game.

The offense ran at a high octane level last season and if they have a repeat, then you can count on the extra point to be good.

Robinson was successful on 45 out of 47 tries and those numbers with the two field goals, had Jake with 51 points.

That has this young man in fourth place for career scoring and with another year like 2011 season, Robinson could end his career in second place in points scored for the Hawks.

Zach Henshaw will hold this record for a while as he ended his playing days with 306 points for Canyon Lake last season.

Robinson had two field goals from 22 and 27 yards last season and could give Coaches more decisions on how to score when crossing the midfield stripe.

“I want to be perfect this year,” Robinson said. “I had a pretty good Summer and kicked lots of field goals.”

Robinson will also be seen in the defensive backfield playing some safety this year.

When talking about the season last year Robinson was not bashful, “We have to push harder, when we went down (Boerne game) it was a graveyard…we have to prepare to score first and have a better first game.”

Canyon Lake had a pretty impressive set of games since the middle of the 2010 season. The Hawks have a 12-3 record and in that time period have scored first in 12 of those games.

So Robinson has hit on a nerve that might be key to another successful season. Scoring first could give this team the momentum needed to get to the elusive playoffs this season.

That first game against Blanco has not been something the offense would like to send to the lab so other offenses could learn from.

Canyon Lake scored 14 points last year in the win, but averaged 35 for the season. Two years ago only one score in the five point loss for an offense that averaged more that 23 points.

The good news was with the defense as they held Blanco to respectable low scores. Winning on the road against a team the Hawks have come up empty the last two times would be a good way to start this season.

The Hawks will have a chance to continue making a name for themselves and having an 8-2 record without a playoff game has to be rectified this season and should keep this squad focused on all their opponents.

“We knew the Wimberley game would be a big game,” Robinson closed. “We came out over prepared and we weren’t mentally focused.”

The Wimberley game did end up giving Canyon Lake two losses last season. Boerne Greyhounds were a beatable team.

Canyon Lake has to score enough to give Jake Robinson a chance to tack a little extra to the scoreboard.

Special teams will make Robinson special this season and hopefully when everything is finished we will have a new player in second place in scoring.
