Canyon Lake’s Prognosis for a Passing Grade

Canyon Lake is 1-4 going into their District part of the season.
What is interesting is that Canyon Lake has had many stats that would indicate a record that could be better if you did not know any results of games.

Only six yards separate CL with teams played. The Hawks have a better per rush average and a better yards per catch.
Canyon Lake is also winning the turnover battle giving up three while forcing six so far this season.
The Hawks have been penalized over 100 yards more than their counterpart, which is certainly a negative and many games can be traced to this as a reason for a loss or two.
Another contributing factor rests with special teams. Two touchdowns on kick-off returns as well as punt returns which helped turn the field position battle against Canyon Lake.

Another way to look at this record is basing it on who was scheduled for those seasons.
We are taking the 2008 season out of this equation for the CL Hawks, since it was a first year program playing against a stacked deck that year.
Canyon Lake’s opponents have a 14-10 record presently and the Hawks were in three of those losses with the last game being the first one where their opponent (La Grange) totally outplayed your Hawks.
The 2009 campaign, CL played one of their toughest non-district set of games.
Running Back Eduardo Covarrubias
Brandeis, Gonzales, La Vernia, and Blanco: Gonzales was the only team out of that quartet that had a subpar year. The rest were all in the playoffs and proved their worth for that season.
2010 season did not have a great group of teams in non-district. La Vernia and Austin Travis made the playoffs with a 5-5 records while Luling was 3-7.
Sealy and Blanco had a much better season and Canyon Lake lost to both of those teams that year.
2011 should still be fresh in CL’s heart and minds as they beat everyone on their schedule. Austin Travis was not even close to their previous year’s campaign. Luling had a bette season but still missed the playoffs.
La Vernia went three games into the playoff season. Canyon Lake won 34-23 that year.
Blanco went four games longer. Canyon Lake won 14-7 over the Panthers.
Sealy was one and done last year. Canyon Lake won 38-34.
2012 Season, Canyon Lake has played four teams that have a good chance to continue their season this time around.
La Grange, Somerset, and Blanco have a good shot of advancing, while Burnet and La Vernia have both shown weakness against other teams.
What does this all mean? Canyon Lake is starting District 27-3A play with an 0-0 record, which is the same for every other team.
District 27-3A has shown some strength from top to bottom this year. Doormats in the past (Bandera and Fredericksburg) have shown a new invigorated attitude and certainly have a mind set of knowing they have as good a chance as any other team. Wins do that for young man, it should give them tons of confidence.
The past two years, both of those schools have started district with no wins and had some embarrassing losses.
Boerne has a passing attack that will stretch any team and will also test defensive backs to the nth degree. Revenge or not, this game will be on a Thursday and Canyon Lake will need a win and it will be on the road again this year.
Navarro is the antithesis to Boerne as this team still runs the ball all the time and will throw a pass every 12 snaps. This team has four backs with over 40 rushes already. Each of these four runners have more yards rushing than Canyon Lake’s Eduardo Covarrubias so far this year.
Wimberley is Wimberley…their record is 2-3, but their schedule was the toughest of all the district brothers. Yes, they lost several playmakers from last year, but you can bet that whoever they suit up will be prepared to win the battle they will be engaged in.
Canyon Lake has a disappointing record but with several players on the sideline the past couple of games can certainly play against your chemistry. The question is will those missed classes (games) keep them from doing better when their tests come up for five Friday’s in a row.
Lessons have been plentiful this season and how this Hawk team learn from those road blocks will tell us if they will be going onto college (playoffs) at the end of district play.
Can they? You betcha, but you can also tell that this will not be a cakewalk and every week will be a playoff game.
