Canyon Lake’s Defensive Time Starts Now!
Time to have some love for this year’s defense for Canyon Lake.
Right off the bat you will see Linebacker McGuire Johnson that is now having having a Bobby Flint (holds tackle record for CL) type of year with 73 tackles for this season.
That averages out to over 12 a game while Flint averaged 13.7 tackles in the 2010 season.
Another Linebacker, Conner Drum, is averaging nine tackles a game.
Here are the top ten tacklers this season.
Tackles for Loss
1. McGuire Johnson 73 1. T. J. Gregory 4 2. Conner Drum 54 2. McGuire Johnson 3 3. T.J. Gregory 43 2. Conner Drum 3 4. Trevor Duty 36 2. Jon Cervantes 3 5. Daniel Camarillo 34 6. Isaac Pruna 32 Pass Break Ups 7. Doug Hubnik 31 1. Javier Mendez 5 7. Isaac Mendez 31 2. Daniel Camarillo 3 7. Jon Cervantes 31 2. Doug Hubnik 3 10. Chandler Faulkner 26 4. Jon Cervantes 2
Other defensive accolades: Daniel Camarillo has recorded two blocks and Trevor Duty has forced two fumbles.
This defense has not had a successful stint for getting to quarterbacks this season. CL’s defense has just two sacks so far this season as well as just two interceptions.
You can see what an interception can do in a game from last week’s Hubnik interception returned for a touchdown. Hubnik has done that twice in his career, which is also the only player to have that distinction.
Injuries have certainly curtailed some of the numbers for the players above, but now is the time for all good man to come to the aid of there football team.
Canyon Lake will have a chance to improve in district play, but there will be two teams that will have a major impact on how this Hawk team will either have a T-Shirt company being called or not.
Navarro will be the final game and everyone already knows what will happen in that contest. These Panthers will run on almost every down and in the past two years this team has had a freeway through our defense.
Year Att. Rushing Yds. Number Passes Yds 2011 55 411 14 85 2010 76 533 5 3 2012 Totals 323 2470 32 229
Another team will pass many more times with this being their avenue of moving the ball…the last two years against Boerne are as follows.
Year Comp Att Int Yds Number of Runs Yards 2011 15 23 1 214 30 196 2010 17 38 1 171 20 60 2012 Totals 123 206 5 1654 134 724
You can divide the 2012 season by six games and see very quickly what type of teams will be coming in the next month.
Defense will have to be on and give Canyon Lake’s offense their chance to shine.
Forcing more turnovers will be imperative and reduce the number of penalties and yards given up to their opponents.
The Hawks have over 300 yards in penalties and those can be connected to games that might have been victories for CL.
