MV Hawks 8th ‘B’ Squad out run Greyhounds, 24-16

Mountain Valley 8th Grade Team listens in after 24-16 Victory over Boerne

Mountain Valley 8th grade ‘B’ squad improved their record to 3-0-1 for District as they held off a fast closing Greyhound team at Hawk Stadium on Wednesday night, 24-16.

The game had a lot of fireworks to start this contest.

Boerne started with a fumble on their first play, then Mountain Valley responded with a one play 43 yard run from Jaden Balmos as he went through the Greyhounds like a Knight in a Chess game.

Balmos ended this game with 101 yards, with seven of his 11 carries going for eight yards or further. Pretty impressive for Balmos and a Hawk Offensive Line.

Andrew Neel had am impressive game as he threw a two point conversion to Brandon Courtney, staking a quick, 8-0 lead.

Charlie McIntosh had his second interception in as many games on the Greyhounds next set of downs.

Mountain Valley responded again with a 39 yard drive in seven plays with a Neel to Mason Blackburn 26 yard pass on a fourth down play when the Hawks were needing eight yards for a first down.

Before Boerne knew what was going they were down 16 points and would be fighting from behind for the rest of this game.

Boerne did strike back with a 22 yard run to start the second quarter getting within smelling distance, 16-8 score.

What did your Hawks do next? They responded again with a 56 yard drive on six plays.

This drive had MV being successful with four explosive plays on this set of plays.

Balmos ran for 10 yards and a first.
McIntosh caught a 13 yarder for another first, three plays later.
Balmos scampered for 12 yards on his next play for another first.
Then a beautiful 19 yard pass from Neel to Courtney ended this drive and for all intense and purposes the game. Advantage Mountain Valley, 24-8 going into halftime.

This pass play had Courtney being double teamed down the sideline and Neel just dropped the ball in a perfect spot for the catch at their goal line, and the rest was history.

Which is what these young men will probably have to go study after the game with this contest being on a Wednesday.

“It all started with the line, they fired out on the ball,” QB Andrew Neel started. “The right side is usually not my strong side, but it all started with my line that gave me the time to get the pass off.”

“I really did not think I was going to catch it (the ball),” Sure hands, SE Courtney said. “It feels good getting a touchdown.”

Responding on what might have happened in the second half, “We did not have any subs and got tired…but we gave it our all,” Courtney finished.

Mountain Valley had just two players on their sideline with Boerne had enough extra players that subbing would allow a distinct advantage as this game matured into the fourth quarter.

The Hawks did put their high octane offense on idle for the second half which will be addressed for their next game.

MV had just 43 yards for their last two quarters or 21% of their yardage for this game.

A fumble to start the fourth quarter did have the fans and Hawk team a little nervous as Boerne had a chance for a tying score.

Boerne had an 11 play drive that stalled when they were stopped needing just one yard on their fourth down play on Mountain Valley’s 21 yard line.

The Greyhounds converted a fourth down and third down to keep this drive alive causing some angst on the home side of Hawk stadium.

A very clean game with no penalties for either team and only three turnovers combined.

That little stat helped allow Mountain Valley to stave off Boerne winning that battle 2 to 1.

Mountain Valley will end their season next Thursday when they travel to Navarro to face a talented Panther club.

“It gives us a challenge against Navarro next week,” Neel said. “They finished first last year and so this game will challenge us.”
