Freshman Lady Hawks Lose Overtime Game, 50-47

The Freshman Lady Hawks fought a tough game with Fredericksburg, but could not get that last basket for a win, 50-47.

“We came out slow and it all was very mental,” Coach Shannon Hoberer said. “Our focus was not great, but after halftime they calmed down and started to execute.”

Several players had key baskets and free throws down the stretch in staging an eight point comeback in that fourth quarter that helped delay the Varsity game due to only having three refs for this evening.

This Freshman game was called by one referee for almost the entire affair with reinforcements arriving with under two minutes in that critical fourth stanza.

Canyon Lake found themselves down nine and eight points in the second half before their last push that barely missed a perfect comeback.

In their earlier game, Fredericksburg blew out CL but that game was not as bad as those results garnered. The Billies had borrowed some JV players for the game when several players were sick for that game.

The result was a convincing win that evening.

“In our first game we weren’t ready to play right after the Christmas break,” Bailey Drum started. “In this game we wanted it more, it was like this is going to happen.”

This game was tight throughout and your Hawks were down, 39-36 when the reinforcement refs arrived.

Most Freshman games rely on only two refs for a game, but this evening the numbers were all odd, when only one and then three refs called this clash. This might of been the only time this year that a three man crew had called a freshman game.

Caitlyn Mabry was a rebounding machine as she helped the Hawks in getting many more shots with her seven offensive rebounds this night. Mabry finished with 14 total rebounds.

“We were prepared and we practiced our defense,” Mabry rebounded. “All of our passes have been getting better, but we have gotten so much better and we have worked hard in practice.”

Sydney Johnson responded with an offensive rebound and put back to draw the Hawks back to within one point, 39-38 with two minutes left in regulation.

On her shot Johnson exclaimed, “I thought to myself that I was going to get that ball and get it back up. We were trying to get refocused, get back into the game, and work our offense.”

Two free throws by the Billies 15 seconds later had another three point lead for our visitors.

Bailey Drum then had two of her game hight 15 points off a jump shot 25 seconds later that helped reel the Billies back to that one point lead, 41-40.

Drum was fouled with 1:03 left in the contest but could only get one shot in, but that point tied the score as both teams had plenty of chances in that last minute to settle this affair.

To no avail.

Halley McKnight started overtime sinking two free throws and Drum had a basket to give CL their last lead, 45-44 with right under two minutes left in overtime.

Fredericksburg would score all of their OT points on free throws.

With eight seconds left Canyon Lake needed a fast bucket and Drum once again had a great look at the basket, but the shot was just off the mark leaving a sinking feeling for the Hawks.

However, this freshman team continues to improve and showed that they will be a force as they continue their high school careers.
