Any Points will be a Bonus for CL’s Boys Track with Long Distance and Hurdles

Canyon Lake will be hosting District 27-3A Track and Field this Wednesday and Friday and The

Senior Chris Neiland running Long Distance

ReSporter will break down each school and event to help in letting fans know what are some don’t miss competition.

This will be a three part series and this is our Third part for the Boys. Today we will go over Long Distance and Hurdle events.

Once again the only points Canyon Lake can muster in this group of events is 2 points and just like in the Girls Track, the Boy’s points come from Alex Martinez who runs on the Junior Varsity squad.

Since Martinez also frequents the 4×400 Meter Relay on the JV, then that reduces any chance of scoring points in these events.

However, CL could pull off some surprises if the tea leaves are doing more than just making tea.

Boerne has the long distance horses as well as Bandera this year. Both of these teams have taken more points away from Fredericksburg than for Canyon Lake.

The Hawks however might not score and that would make points that could be pulled away from the Billies will make that a hard feat to overcome.

 Long Distance Runs and Hurdles
 1. Boerne 45
 2. Bandera 37
 3. Fredericksburg 35
 4. Navarro 30
 5. Wimberley 6
 6. Canyon Lake 2

==============
First off will be the 800 Meter Run where Isaac Mendez is trying to regain some of his past luster as he came to CLHS with some medals around his neck in long distance races.

Other sports has made that a hard road for this Junior and his 2:14 run is about 5 seconds out of point contention.

The good news is that Isaac Mendez has been running against some larger schools and has some better times but they would not make the stat sheet because of not placing.

So a surprise could be in order for this three sport athlete.

Boerne and Fredericksburg has a strangle hold on this event, but Fredericksburg will have athletes in several of these events that have scored but only has three running events. That could open some holes for other schools.

Isaac Mendez is on the move in the 800 Meter Run.

————————
The Mile Run or 1600 Meter Relay will also give CL a decent chance of scoring since Mike Russell last race put him into contention this week.

Russell is presently just 4 to 5 seconds from a fourth place finish and this will be a fun event to see what happens with the Athlete with the Kick.

Mendez also has a chance to get points with a best of 5:04 this season and a good showing could propel him into the points stand.
————————
One of the most grueling races would be the 3200 Meter Run. Quick, how many fans reading this would say they would enjoy this type of event or would choose it if we needed a third runner?

Thought so….Chris Neiland will be Canyon Lake’s best hope but he will need to uncork a season best run to help the Hawks with points.

Presently about 15 seconds away if all the runners had their season best run.

A 15 second improvement is not as daunting as it might seem when the race has 8 laps to complete.
————————-
Canyon Lake could of used Chandler Faulkner this year as he was in the points last year for the Hurdles. But, he has not been running and now the Hawks will have Hurdles that will seem to be a couple of inches higher than the other district schools.

Devin Coco will give CL its best hope for points this year. Coco scored at the Hawk Relays and that field had several 5A schools running against him.

Coco is right out of the point scoring column, but that could change with some enthusiastic fans cheering him on.
————————–
Finally the 300 Meter Hurdles has Alex Martinez (JV) with the 5th best time in District 27-3A this season.

Once again don’t look for this young man to make this Varsity run, but you will certainly see him with a chance to score some points for CLJV’s team.

Navarro’s Hayden Miracle will be the class Varsity runner as he presently has a two second advantage over the rest of this field.

The ReSporter looks forward to the next two days and hope you found this helpful as you come out to watch your Hawks.
