Little Things Turn into a Big Loss to Burnet, 34-7
Canyon Lake could not hold the water back as the Bulldogs scored 27 unanswered points, losing 34-7 on a soggy Homecoming night at Hawk Field.
“We have to figure out how to cut out those little things,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We can’t overcome penalties and turnovers and we are lacking in getting big plays.”
These two former district foes from days gone by were still locked into an anyone can win contest well into the third quarter as Burnet just led 13-7 with three minutes left in that quarter.
Then the proverbial dam broke with a rush of passes as Burnet’s Quarterback Derek Kiser passed for 289 yards to finish off the Hawks.
Sometimes a team is just better than what is put out on the field and after this game, the Hawks can safely say this is the case.
Burnet has played Canyon Lake five times and not knowing the stats from the 2008 season, Burnet has settled into a team that dominates the Hawk’s pass defense.

Canyon Lake did answer with their only touchdown drive with on a 10 play 55 yard drive to tie the score at 7-all as the first quarter was coming to an end.
The Hawk defense then stopped the Bulldogs after a 9 play 18 yard drive and having CL starting on their 30 yard line after a failed draw play for Burnet.
Canyon Lake had Burnet right where they wanted them with 10 minutes left in the half and needing a vintage Hawk drive.
The Hawks responded with a 14 play drive down to Burnet’s 10 yard line. On this drive the Hawks had a dropped pass in the end zone before having to attempt a field goal that was a gadget play resulting in fooling no Bulldog in this county as Connor Ricker had to eat the ball and 10 yards of lost real estate.
Ricker would also be part of the Hawks next gadget hook and lateral play that helped CL with a first down on Burnet’s 15 yard line with precious little time before half.
This time a field goal try was blocked and nothing to show for two promising drives before the half that easily could of changed the whole game persona in each locker room.
The Hawk’s Defense had another stop to start the second half but Canyon Lake ended up having to punt. But this drive also had a wide open receiver with a chance to score if only the ball could of been held onto.
Burnet’s next three drives were all for scores which eventually put this game out of reach for the home team.
“We did not play our type of football in the second half,” Coach Drum said. “We have not done it in four weeks but we need to play a whole game.”
Finding that combination to open the safe and having a chance to find the riches that comes with a win might be those little things keeping the Hawks out of that strong box with riches.
Former Head Coach Matt Monzingo did not do the Hawks any favors with a schedule that would test any teams before district starts.

La Grange beat Marble Falls by 26 points and Marble Falls beat Burnet recently.
Little things can add up and that seems to be the overwhelming problem for the Hawks, as they have that one penalty that can stop a drive, or a pass play that just does not get caught, or _______ fill in the blank.
Canyon Lake still has a legitimate chance of finding a key for the safe but time is becoming paramount for this team to find it’s mojo and have this offense start to click.
Special Teams was not a problem in this game but a blocked field goal (little thing) did have a roll in points being lost.
Defense had some good series of downs, except for allowing too many explosive plays for touchdowns or Kiser finding enough room to run for a first down on third and long plays.
Offense had penalties, and times when the running back would slip down or the line would lose a battle in the trenches causing lost yardage and loss of momentum on several drives.
When you add all of those areas up, then you have to deduce that this game would be lost.
Now Canyon Lake knows they have a decent offense, decent defense, and decent special teams.
If those three items can be put together for a four quarter game, then these Hawks could answer the bell soon and find that key to open a safe with many victories inside.
“We have to find a way to pump our team up so we can go out their and win,” Tight End Connor Ricker stated. “We need to prepare for the next team and just mentally think and play four quarters.”
“FOCUS,” Offenseive Lineman Cory Rustin said firmly. “We had mental mistakes and we need to concentrate on every aspect of the game.”
On what has been the difference in the Somerset game and the last two opponents and how they are slowing down our running game, “The linebackers we have been playing are a lot more active than Somerset and the linebackers are the ones getting all the tackles.”
Simple game now it is time to see if those problem areas can be answered.
