CL Football: What do we know?

What do we know?

It is off week for Canyon Lake and this team is still looking for their first win of the season.

Are the Hawks as bad as their record?

A new offensive scheme would give you an idea that there might be some rough spots in this season. Also, this second half the campaign might also give you an idea of some better results on the gridiron.

We have learned that CL has had those little mistakes throughout this season. Whether it has been a penalty or a broken play at the wrong time, that end result has been heartache more than exuberance.

What we have also learned is Canyon Lake’s defense and special teams have cost more games than this new offense.

A total team game will need to show up for district play starting this coming Friday.

Canyon Lake has also by far had the hardest non-district schedule this year and you could also use that facet for the rough start.

Non-District Schedule: W=Win L=Lost
Boerne Bandera Billies Texans Navarro
Hondo (L) George West (W) Burnet (L) Llano (W) SA Antonian (W)
Medna Valley (L) Devine (W) Memorial (W) Giddings (W) SA Christian (W)
SA Antonian (L) Llano (L) Brady (W) Dripping Spr (L) SA Holy Cross (W)
Llano (W) Comfort (L) Lampasas (W) La Vernia (L) Marion (W)
Lytle (W) La Vernia (L) Llano (W) Liberty Hill (L) Sam Houston (W)

It is apparent that Navarro certainly has an upper hand on District 27-3A after surveying the first five games.

All their games have not been against top flight competition, but that age old question is how bad does a team have to

beat there opponent for a team to take notice?

Navarro has certainly answered that question by scoring over 40 points in four of their five wins. That is hard to do for their type of offense that can certainly control and wear down the clock.

Fredericksburg is next with four wins that have and this has been there best win total in several years up to district schedule.

Fredericksburg only loss was to Burnet, which was also a team on CL’s schedule. Those other teams on the Billies schedule have not been on murderers roll and there is one nugget you can take from this team.

They have momentum and will be looking to start this part of their season in the win column.

Boerne has had their quarterback out this season and are now on a two game winning streak. They also have not played a tough non-district schedule and the jury is still out for this Greyhound team.

Bandera started on fire, but have since started playing down to their competition. La Vernia did beat the Bulldogs soundly and once again this is a team that also played Canyon Lake.

La Vernia would be a front runner for District 27-3A as this Bear team has also beaten Wimberley on the Texan’s home turf.

Wimberley is Wimberley and Canyon Lake will have to get those past losses to the Texans out of their head if the Hawks plan on turning this game with their first victory ever over our friends to the North.

Simply put, it would not matter what Wimberley’s record would be….Canyon Lake has to extricate some demons to beat this team.

Does Canyon Lake have a chance even with their 0-5 record going into their first game with Fredericksburg?

Certainly they do but taking care of the ball and reducing those penalties would help get this Hawk team off on the right foot.

Having some ‘special’ special team improvement would certainly help in getting these Hawkws in the win ledger.

Lastly, CL’s defense will have to be all in and start to control the trenches and hopefully the upcoming games.

Just nine punts by the opposition and Burnet did not have to punt once in their game. La Grange only had three punts all in the second half after this game was well in hand.

Good news? Some players will be healthy for the first time in this game in some key areas on the field. That might be a formula that could give Canyon Lake some momentum of their own starting the second half this season.

Now, if Canyon Lake can just take care of those little things….
