CL Gold Wins 18 while Losing 4, 18-4

The Canyon Lake Gold Juniors baseball team took their final game on the chin, but the overall effect of a great season will always be best memory of the season.

Yes, the game did go to Seguin, but in the end the Gold team won 18 games on the season with a paltry four loses. That is the score that can be remembered by the players, Coaches, and fans.

The team had endured many games and highlights, “I had been with the team for a long time and enjoyed their last year,” a reflecting Coach Eddie Avey said. “It has been great getting to know the kids.”

The Hawks started the game on a bright note when Nick Cahill and Cody Powell both had back to back doubles in the first inning allowing the good guys to jump out to a two run lead.

Seguin matched that total in the bottom of the same inning but the next two innings was the downfall for the mighty Hawks when they could not find the plate and helped the opposition with eight base on balls giving the Hawks a Mount Everest to climb up for a chance to victory.

Colton Avey, who had been on a hitting spree the last few games continued his hot streak, when he laced a ball over the centerfielder’s head for a double. The next two batters struck out however leaving two players stranded.

gordontheplumberAvey was hit by the pitcher on his other two plate appearances telling you the team did not want to chase the balls hit off the bat of this young man.

“I have a sweet spot on the bat,” Avey said. “I’m looking forward to high school next fall.”

The players do have other days right around the corner as their next phase in life is the chance to compete on the high school arena.

Cody Powell was the person at the plate that could not be corralled, as he finished the game and season with three hits and two runs batted in.

Tyler Vinson was the starting pitcher and had a rocky start in the second inning when he was replaced by a whole host of other pitchers. Vinson did return to the mound and held Seguin scoreless in the final inning.

The same routine played out the first time the two teams met, when Vinson kept the visitors scoreless in the last inning. He struck out two players in the inning and waited a couple of inning too late to close the door on Seguin.

“I had more confidence with my pitches the second time,” a still confident Vinson exclaimed. “I was hoping we could move on…but we had a pretty good year and a good group of friends.”

Once again we go back to the title of the story…the game of baseball is and should be the whole body of work. The accomplishments for this team set the bar very high and their are a lot of skins on the wall.

That happens when you win 18-4.
