Canyon Lake JV has More in Win over Blanco, 27-8

CLJV relishing an after game talk after a solid win

CLJV, relishing an after game talk, after a solid win

This might be a good year for Canyon Lake football as the CLJV finally got that long awaited win as they took the Blanco Panthers to the wood shed on Thursday night winning, 27-8.

“They got after it this week against the Varsity and it showed,” Head JV Coach John Barthels said. “This year, the Offensive Line knows where to go.”

That was an understatement as Canyon Lake rushed for over 300 yards while averaging a lofty 9 yards per carry.

With all that being said, this game was won as the Hawks were clinging to a 13-8 lead to start the second half.

Canyon Lake had the ball first and was held to three plays and a punt on their first possession of the half and how they would respond to a Blanco team with their defense would go a long way in defining this game.

In fact, CL had been finding ways to lose going all the way back to their Seventh Grade year with it culminating last year when they went winless.

Blanco had scored on their last possession of the first half and seemed to reach a good tempo driving 58 yards moving down the field.

Could the Panthers start the second half the way they ended the second quarter?

Answer? No, because Canyon Lake would respond royally as the Panthers could only garner 4 yards on the Hawk defense and were forced to punt after three plays.

Keneth Jowers made his presence known as this linebacker will be responsible for several Panthers waking up sore in the morning.

“I try to get the best hits that I can,” Hit Man Jowers started. “We have hit the weight room this off season and practicing against the Varsity will make us good.”

Jowers was also responding to how much better this team looked compared to their previous year.

“The Coaches have pushed us to get better,” Jowers finished.

The Hawks then had Running Back Tim Romero uncork a 73 yard run right through the Panther line and 9 seconds later Canyon Lake had opened up a much safer 21-8 lead.

A stop by the defense followed by a one play 73 yard run from speedster Romero. Was the key to this win.

“My guys knocked out their linebacker and I just hit the hole,” Romero said calmly.

The run had Romero outrunning several Panthers and about at the 30 yard line you could see Romero sneaking a peak behind him to see if he would make it.

“I had to check just in case,” Romero said quickly.

This was not the same team that suited up last season as the Hawks tripled the Panthers yardage finishing with 330 total yards and almost 9 yards per carry.

Both offense and defense was clicking on this night leaving this Blanco team with a much longer trip home than they would want.

Nine players had a chance to carry the ball and Heath McDonough also touched the ball on a pretty pass play from Brandon Courtney for 28 yards.

Austin Brennan was the workhorse in the backfield on this night with a whopping 8 carries, which adds to a lot when you have eight other players that would also have their hands on a ball on this night.

“We came to practice and we have more drive, more concentration, more focus, and more energy,” Brennan said one more time. “I have improved my speed and I could not make runs without my lineman.”

These running backs might have a chance to continue this year on a much higher note than previous seasons based on being sure they are giving the right people credit.

What does this mean for a team that had been searching for a win? “This was one of our best game’s as a team….this was very exciting,” Brennan carried into the end zone.

CLJV TEAM won this game just ask 10 players that had a chance to advance the ball. Good Win and Congrats!!
