Hawk’s Score 43 Unanswered Points in Win over Smithville, 43-14

Canyon Lake woke up from their slumber this season and were able to have more ease in a win over Smithville Tigers, 43-14 at the Lake.
The Hawks had some performances in this game that stood out and made some players look super.
Running Back Josh DeVries had the longest run from scrimmage passing Eduardo Covarrubias 75 yard run against Bandera in 2010. Along with that record, DeVries also had the highest average with a lofty 17.5 yards per carry.
In that same vein, century running tandems in CL’s history, was also topped by 22 yards.

Defensive End Robert Woods, was used as a running back, which also helped when he finished with 123 yards via the ground.
Woods was used primarily on offense when Running Back Bailey Hahn was seen in street clothes on the sideline with QB Skyler Tschoepe.
On playing on both sides of the ball Woods would respond, “They wanted me to run because I am bigger and I can move the lineman and I can also help with my blocking, but I am kind of even on which side I like to play.”
“When Coach says to get a drink and get ready to go in, then I just get ready to give it 100%,” Woods knocked.
Canyon Lake has a wealth of depth at the running back position…and it was all on stage for this second act.
Smithville came out like a ‘Jack in the Box’ for this game with a 68 yard kick-off return and the Tigers starting on the Hawk 22 yard line.
With a penalty helping their cause, Smithville scored on four plays and after a two point conversion they had scored their first points of the season with less than two minutes off the clock.
“I blame that start on myself,” Head Coach Charles Drum said. “I told them we need to get better and right off the bat we were needing to tie it up,”
“This game was cleaner than last week,” Coach Drum beat. “We can’t keep having penalties, because there will be other teams that will make us pay, but these are lessons you learn in non-district. We challenged them at halftime to put them away and they responded”
And just like that, Canyon Lake would respond with a 13 play 61 yard drive. Robert Woods was the work horse on this set of downs with eight carries and his yardage matching his jersey number, 48.
The Hawks answered with a Josh DeVries run to tie the score and CL would see a glimpse of some fireworks with the DeVries run for that two point conversion.

Canyon Lake’s defense was not in tune as Smithville had a drive the Hawks would be proud of, in the works, for 15 plays and 68 yards when Linebacker, Jared Bruckman, stopped a third down play when he shot the gap to give the Tigers a longer fourth down play that proved unsuccessful with an incompletion.
Bruckman responded on his play, “Last week’s game spurred us on and got us angry and we knew we could overcome it….our goals in the game was to get a very large number of points and give the crowd what they wanted for this season.”
Bruckman certainly helped with his defense and turning the tide of a game that seemed on the teeter totter.
With the ball on the 18 yard line, DeVries would take the ball to the house on an 82 yard sprint. The play took 15 seconds and CL would take control of the game, scoring 43 unanswered points.
“I knew I was faster (than the Tiger in pursuit) and all I had to do was a simple push down since he was behind me,” SuperVries said with ease.
On what this win can mean for Canyon Lake, “This will help bring some confidence back to the team,” DeVries said while thinking about leaping some tall buildings on a single bound. “We won big and we pretty much shut them out after their start….all I know is that I need to buy the offensive line a steak dinner.”
That DeVries run was seven yards further than Eduardo Covarrubias has four years earlier against Bandera.

A fumble by the Tigers on their next possession was a fourth down try and it helped CL to get started on the Tigers 46 yard line.
The big play of this drive had Sophomore Quarterback Brandon Courtney finding Hayden Dubois down the middle for a 16 yard gain on a fourth down that needed 10 yards for a first down.
Four plays later and Canyon Lake would increase their lead to, 22-8.
Smithville seemed to think the ball was kryptonite on the next kickoff as no Tiger cared to field the ball and Evan Schuller would recover the ball on Smallville’s 35 yard line.
Canyon Lake could not capitalize as a fumbled snap help snuff out another chance of scoring before halftime.
The Hawks would take the second half kickoff and drive in just four plays covering 65 yards.
Three of those four runs were over 10 yards when SuperVries would skirt 37 yards into the Smallville’s end zone, faster than a speeding bullet.
That run would catapult DeVries over the 100 yard plateau with 132 steps on just seven carries. DeVries speed was evident throughout this game.
“Compared to last year, I have cut a whole second off of my 40 time,” DeVries said bending some steel. “I did a lot of off season work to get my speed better.”
Canyon Lake’s defense had settled in after those first two drives and Smithville could muster no yards of offense while the Hawks were scoring 43 points.

Defense will win games as they can get the ball back for your offense while helping with field position. That was the key for this 43 point outburst and a needed win for the Hawks.
Canyon Lake had two players brought up from Sub-Varsity in Brandon Courtney (Sophomore) and Will Joyner (Freshman), both players called the snaps as Tschoepe nursed an injury.
It was Joyner taking the snaps when Gordon McCleary was streaking down the left sideline on a pass play.
Joyner took the snap on a straight drop back and fired the ball to McCleary and 48 yards later, CL would only need 13 yards for another score.
“I was surprised,” McCleary said. “Coach told Joyner to throw the ball to Josh (DeVries)….it was the wrong snap count, he threw it to the wrong guy, and when he made this play, somehow it turned out right.”
“It was a broken play,” Joyner said calmly. “I just saw him (McCleary) open and he is a lot faster than you think.”
Canyon Lake will now celebrate Homecoming next week when Marion comes calling.
