CLJV Loses to Liberty Hill, 20-16 in Squeaker

Canyon Lake JV squad is night day different team from last season.

Case and point is watching Liberty Hill jumping up and down after winning a squeaker contest over a team that was lucky to score much less get a win a year ago.

The ReSporter remembers interviewing Tyler McCleary after a game last season because he scored two points after intercepting a two point conversion try running 100 yards to score those points.

This year, not only is this team winning, but they are playing with such improvement that any game is a winnable affair.

An on-side kick to start the game did give the Hawks a chance to inflict some pain on this Panther team, but that drive did not produce a first down and Liberty Hill was just delayed in having a chance with the ball.

Liberty Hill would waste no time driving 64 yards on a 16 play drive and milking the first quarter clock while scoring to start the second quarter.

Canyon Lake JV would respond with a 73 yard drive with two explosive runs from Charlie McIntosh (29 yards) and a Austin Brennan (16 yards) carry that ended with a touchdown.

A two point conversion on a Jackson Neel pass to Heath McDonough in the corner of the end zone had changed the complexion of this game.

Liberty Hill had a botched punt after their next drive and CLJV set up shop on the Panthers 32 yard line.

Seven plays later the Hawks had scored again with just 18 second on the clock and after another two point conversion on a Brennan run had a surprising 16-7 score in favor of the good guys.

Liberty Hill would not be denied as they too started the second half with a screamer on-side kick that just hit a Hawk lineman on the foot and allowing a Panther to recover the ball.

Canyon Lake could not find their mojo in the second half as LHJV would score in the fourth quarter which would be all they needed for a, 20-16 win.

A team that was searching for anything positive last year to a game that was just in their grasp and now having a resolve that they can compete with anyone with a chance to win against whoever is suiting up on that opposite side of the line of scrimmage is paramount.

Sixteen points in that second quarter with a chance with the ball to start the second half was an ideal situation for the Hawks.

Canyon Lake controlled that first half with a good offensive line push and running for this Hawk team.

“Looking at where we started and where we are now is shown on how accepting we are…we have a JV team that is filling the holes and have different people each week doing their job,” Head Coach John Barthels said.

Coach Barthels was talking about the players that had moved up to Varsity and having those other players taking over and filling in.

Offensive Lineman Tyler Kidd was instrumental as well as the rest of the running game taking off this season.

“I think it gives us more motivation…everyone played hard and this year we played hard in our games and we are doing what our Coaches are telling us to do,” Kidd said. “That is the main thing in this year versus last season.”

Running Back Charlie McIntosh had a solid game as this is one of those players that is stepping up and giving the JV a chance in all of their games.

“We have been doing sleds a lot and with hard work and effort everyday is how we have improved,” McIntosh admonished. “We have improved a lot and we would like to win the rest of our district games and to be better for next year.”

Canyon Lake JV is a team that has improved the most from where they were last season and even with this loss to Liberty Hill, you could see that high compliment of the opposing team jumping up and down after their win.

That speaks volumes.
