Canyon Lake just missed a chance for a win as their field goal attempt was just short in their loss in Taylor on a Halloween night, 33-31.

This game started like the past two weeks when Josh DeVries fielded the kick-off on the Hawk one yard line and 88 yards later CL was setting up shop at their 11 yard line.

Four plays later, Robert Woods was running the ball into the end-zone from two yards out and a quick lead, 7-0.

Taylor would respond with a 61 yard drive in a five minute span, but a blocked kick would preserve a lead, 7-6.

That blocked extra point would happen two more times on this night as Canyon Lake put pressure on their kicker all night long.

Canyon Lake scored the next 10 points when Mike Thorpe was good from 32 yards out and then after a successful on-side kick, the Hawks would drive 48 yards in just two plays for a, 17-6 lead.

On that first drive, Quarterback Skyler Tschoepe would run the ball four of the 11 plays which would be more runs than he had in the whole game with Fredericksburg last week.

Hayden DuBois had an explosive play for 32 yards, on that drive, which had CL down on Taylor’s 21 yard line.

The door was shut on this drive, by the Duck’s defense, and Canyon Lake settled for a 32 yard field goal.

“They got off of their blocks fast,” Coach Charley Drum said when reacting to how Canyon Lake was not running their usual plays they had success with other clubs this year.

Canyon Lake forced a fumble on Taylor’s next series and the Hawks would have had a chance to put more distance between the two teams, but a fumbled snap would return the ball to the Ducks and a score would bring the tally to, 17-14 instead of a chance for a Hawk score and a 24-6 game.

“Yes, that mistake was on me,” Tschoepe said. “I wanted to make up for that and help my team.”

Both teams would not be able to sustain any drives for the remainder of the half, as Cody Powell helped the defense when he intercepted a pass deep in the Hawk’s territory and it helped sustain a three point lead going into halftime.

Canyon Lake had a great fourth down stop after Taylor had driven to the Hawk’s 28 yard line on their first drive to start the second half.

Haden Lee upended the Duck and Canyon Lake would have another quick two play strike when Tschoepe found DeVries on a wheel route for a touchdown from 71 yards out.

That pass play was the fifth longest in Hawk history and ballooned the lead back to 10 points, 24-14.

Taylor was not finished as they would respond when Devin Taylor rushed around their end for 18 yards and after another blocked extra point, the Ducks were still trailing, 24-20.

Canyon Lake would have two near catches on their next possession and would punt back to this dangerous speed demon Ducks.

It took Taylor just five plays to score after a nifty 50 yard run by Quarterback Joseph Lopez and then Devin Taylor would scoot for 21 yards to paydirt and the Duck’s first lead, 24-27.

The Hawks would return the favor as this game was maturing into the fourth quarter. DeVries ran 50 yards down the sideline, and a 12 yard up the middle run by DuBois for those two plays to get the CL back into the lead when DeVries scored on a bull run over the right side of their line and a, 31-27 lead.

DeVries, counting his 88 yard kick-off return to start the game finished with 281 all purpose yards in this game.

Taylor answered with another quick score when Lopez found Jackson from 11 yards out and a 33-31 lead. Yes, the extra point was blocked again.

With 4:52 seconds left on the clock, the Hawks had enough time to get one last chance for a score.

Starting on their own 25 yard line CL would have a 13 play drive that got the Hawks to their 15 yard line and another chance for a Thorpe 32 yard field goal.

A delay penalty would back the Hawks up just far enough to make that field goal try short and Taylor’s first win of this season.

“We should have not put ourselves in that position,” Coach Drum said in response to that penalty having an impact on how the game finished. “We are fine and we are still 2-2 in district and we know that every week will be a battle.”

Canyon Lake, with that 2-2 District 14-4A-I record, still has one more game with Boerne at Hawk Stadium as this district will have a lot of Coaches searching for tie breaking rules to see who finishes where after all the dust settles on this year’s campaign.

“At least there is a next game,” DeVries said what asked about his comment on this night’s game. “Working hard is the recipe for success and we will work harder this week and good things will come from it.”

“We played solid, but those littlest of mistakes became bigger,” Senior Tschoepe said. “Things happen and we will get this turned around.”

Tough loss but the season still has a lot of life in it for what could be a joyful ride.
