Canyon Lake can now mark another item off their ‘Bucket List’ when they took care of the Taylor Ducks in three sets and getting their first playoff win in three playoff tries, 25-15, 25-13, and 25-21.

“It was a good win,” Head Coach Kimberley Paisley said. “This means we get to keep playing.”

The Hawks jumped out to big leads in their first two sets as they continued the same type of game against Taylor they had enjoyed in their match that was played earlier in the Cedar Park Tournament.

“Taylor played better in their third set,” Coach Paisley continued. “This was another bucket list that we set out to accomplish this season in winning the first playoff game. Now everything we do from hear on out is accomplishing another bucked list.”

That Bucket List is pretty full now as, CL will now see about getting some bigger buckets while this season continues into Thursday’s game with Sealy.

The dynamic dual of Bailey Drum and Addison Farley were once again lethal to the Ducks as both players had double digit kills, 16 and 15 respectfully.

Taylor was not able to get more than one point on serves until they’re third set and that happened just once in this contest when the Ducks scored two points.

The Hawks jumped out to an 11 point lead (21-10) in that first set after seeing some nerves taking the best of Canyon Lake as they struggled to get any separations with these Ducks when the contest started.

Canyon Lake had a 6-5 lead when Mariah Ellis took her spot on the serving line. Ellis would not only serve an Ace on her three service points, but she also contributed a Kill to get the Hawks going.

Regan Mickey then responded with seven service points and Canyon Lake continued that momentum for the rest of that first set. Mickey served two aces on this seven point rally.

“Everything we have done is starting to pay off,” Mickey said with excitement. “We have made history in winning our first playoff game, but we will need to not let down and get settled in earlier.”

Mickey made that last response to having a much closer third set and the Hawks having nine service errors in this match.

Bailey Drum had two kills and Hannah Wunderlich also chipped in with a block and kill to keep the serve in the Hawks favor during this run.

The second set started much the same way as the start of the game and Canyon Lake was holding onto a 7-5 lead when it was Senior Libero Hayley Melone turn to serve up some points.

Five points later, CL had a 13-6 lead with help from Drum (3 kills) and Robinson (2 kills) for points.

Alexis Robinson started the game in place of Lillie Sander who still is nursing an injury suffered a couple of weeks ago, but Robinson has proven that she is not a weak link in this line-up.

Canyon Lake would enjoy an increasing lead as this set boiled down to, Senior Ellis again with a four point serve and 25-12 victory to close out the second set.

That third set was much tighter as Taylor was fighting for their life to stay alive and continue their season.

The Ducks never led during this set, but CL only had a 20-18 lead before Sophomore Mickey was able to get three points off her serve and Taylor mistakes.

Setter Mickey was masterful in getting the ball into a good position for Drum and Farley.

“Regan (Mickey) and I have a good communication on what we are going to do and many times we need to change it up,” Addison communicated. “We work really well as a team and it shows off and our practice has paid off in helping us to make history.”

Coach Paisley will be in familiar surrounding in her next outing with the Hawks as the next round will be in Smithville, which happens to be the last coaching gig she enjoyed before making her jaunt up to the Hill Country.

The ReSporter feels this might be that extra nudge for these Hawks as they continue to go into unfamiliar territory with another game to play.

Sealy won District 27-4A as District 26-4A had a good showing with three of the four teams punching their ticket into the second round.

Wimberley beat Salado, 3-0 and Navarro beat Burnet, 3-1, which helps in showing how tough District 26-4A was in comparison to District 25-4A. Fourth place Cuero lost their game with Liberty Hill, 3-1.

Liberty Hill was the only team from that district to win and your Hawks played a five game set with the Panthers in their second game to start this season after rushing out to a 2-0 set lead in that contest.

Canyon Lake will now be getting competition that will be moving up in ability and Coach Paisley was asked what this team will need to work on, “Reducing our errors, ball control, and defense.”

This win was just what the doctor ordered as Taylor was the third seed in their district and this sweep could be down played based on their opponent.

However, Canyon Lake played well enough to draw a third seed and with that as your plumb line, the Hawks did exactly what they needed to do…..a sweep.

Congrats Hawks and Go Get’em this Thursday!!!

So to recap the Bucket List:
*Most wins ever….31
*Longest winning streak ever…..10
*Furthest Hawk Volleyball has gone in Playoffs…..2nd Round….etc.
*Finished 2nd in District.
*Not only won a trophy in their three tournaments this season.
