CL Hawks Roll Snake Eyes in Loss to Boerne, 42-35

Like four of the five losses this year by seven or fewer points, the River Boat Gambler Hawks, needed just one touchdown for a win, losing to Boerne, 42-35.
“They (Canyon Lake) played their butts off tonight,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We have to learn to finish ball games…we were playing to win and we needed to make plays and that is something that we need to fix.”
The Hawks were either tied or led throughout this contest except when it mattered most, when the game clock hit 0:00.

What might had been the best play of the night was having CL winning the coin toss and giving the Hawks the ball first on what would be a back and forth affair.
There were only two times in this game, that both club’s defense was able to stop their counterpart.

Canyon Lake started the second half with a first play interception when Josh DeVries stole one from the Greyhounds and on the Hawk’s last drive when a fourth down pass play was just off the finger tips of the Hawk’s receiver, Evan Schuller for a change of possessions to the Greyhounds.
CL started this game with their patented running game and drove the ball for 66 yards on 10 plays, capped off by a DeVries 37 yard run around the right end of the Greyhounds defense.
Mike Thorpe would be automatic on all of his extra point attempts as usual for a, 7-0 lead.
Boerne would turn the tables and run the ball, on six of their 11 plays. The drive would tie the score and this see/saw action was in motion.
Canyon Lake’s kick-off unit pulled off another good return when they set up shop on Boerne’s 44 yard line for their next chance to advance the ball.
That they did when, QB Skyler Tschoepe had a silhouette move, for a nifty 23 yard run, which happened to be his longest this year.
Hayden DuBois would have the honors when he finished this drive from one yard out and a, 14-7 lead as the second quarter had just got started.
The Greyhounds would answer with a 63 yard eight play drive when QB Quinten Dormady would find his favorite target, David Snelling, with a 26 yard touchdown pass and another tied score, 14-14.

Canyon Lake reciprocated with another time consuming drive for 66 yards and 13 plays when DeVries scored from nine yards out and another Hawk seven point lead, 21-14.
This drive featured the Hawk’s first pass of the night when facing a fourth and four yards needed for a first on the Greyhound’s 27 yard line. Evan Schuller was the recipient and set up the score when DeVries ran the ball in from their.
The ‘Bad’ news was having the clock still showing 1:47 left and another chance for this Boerne passing machine to score.
True to form, the Greyhounds would move 72 yards on nine pass plays. One play was a sack while the Hawk’s were also served with an interference call on another play to help Boerne with their touchdown.
A screen play helped this drive as their first reception resulted in 36 yards and gave Boerne plenty of time to make due with their score with just 20 seconds remaining before halftime entertainment.
Both teams were pretty even at halftime, with 152 yards of passing for the passing team and 149 yards of rushing for the running team.
Canyon Lake would force their first break of the game with a DeVries interception. Another 56 yard 11 play drive resulted and the Hawk’s took another seven point lead, 28-21.
CL scored on a Jake Merritt pass to Schuller, converting a five yard fourth down play as the River Boat Hawk’s kept dealing surprises in this game of hard knocks.
Guess what, Boerne would not buckle as they had two pass plays of 26 and 33 yards on their next drive to help bring the score to a, 28-27 lead for Canyon Lake after a missed Greyhound extra point.
The Hawks would then take 10:13 off the clock for the longest Hawk drive of this game, CL marched down the field in 17 plays and 79 yards for something that had not been seen yet in this game….an eight point lead, 35-27.
This drive only had one play over 10 yards when DeVries scampered through the right side of the line for 18 yards and converting a third down play that needed 13 yards for a first.
For the night the River Boat Hawks were successful on nine of their 16 third down tries while rolling the dice on all seven of those fourth down plays and getting six successful tries and one snake eye and the game on that last try.
Boerne would once again score and covert their 2 point conversion to tie the score for the fifth time on this back and forth night.

The Greyhounds started changing their stripes on this drive as they finished off this drive with two running plays.
Canyon Lake had plenty of time to get a go ahead TD when they started on their 25 yard line and with a DeVries 12 yard run and a Schuller 15 yard pass reception, the Hawks, had moved close to the mid field stripe.
That is when the River Boat tipped over on the Gambling Hawks and their seventh fourth down conversion fell incomplete and unfortunately giving Boerne one minute to score.
After two incompletions, Boerne would complete a nine yard pass and setting up a fourth down try.
Dormady would make that yard, plus another 35 on his run, going untouched to the end zone.
Ironic that a game featuring running and passing teams, would end up having the passing team winning on a run while the running team losing with the pass, 42-35.
Hawk Sayings about the game:
Freshman Defensive Back and Kick-off returner Will Joyner: “We are going to work hard in practice and brush up on our special teams…we can work hard on defense too.”
Senior Split End Evan Schuller: “We have to work harder and with the same mind set and get on the same page.”
On whether Schuller had any pressure when he was so open for that touchdown pass from Jake Merritt? “Not really, I don’t feel like I am under pressure….my main job is to get into the end zone each time I catch the ball.”
Receiver Merritt on what he was thinking when he was called on to pass on that fourth down play from the five yard line, “I was thinking, ‘just get it there’, ‘just get it there’, ‘just get it there’.
Then what was your reaction after Schuller caught the ball? “I got it there, I got it there!!”
What are your thoughts for this week as you prepare for La Vega? “Come to practice with a good mindset and remember that we are in the same situation as we were last year.”
Canyon Lake went into last year’s playoff as a huge underdog and beat Pleasanton in that first round.
Senior Linebacker Austin Acosta on what it will take in getting ready for the Hawk’s next game, “As a team we need to come in Saturday and start working….this game is in the past and we need to move on….We will need to play our game and don’t hope but do what we need to do defensively.”
Canyon Lake will now take their act on the road as they end District 14-4A-I with the fourth seed and drawing Waco La Vega this coming Friday at Liberty Hill.
This would be justice for CL to start their playoff campaign at a stadium that one of their losses by less than a touchdown can be rectified with a victory and a continuance of their march in this year’s playoffs.
“We can beat anyone,” Coach Drum beat. “We feel confident about how we are playing.”
