Hawk Varsity and JV Lose and Win in games with Llano

Canyon Lake got going two quarters too late in their loss to Llano on Tuesday night at the Hawk gym as Llano jumped out to a 35-20 halftime lead and CL could not close the gap to get back into this game against the Yellowjackets.

Senior Nic Adams Scores 24 in game with Llano

“We gave them too much space,” Head Coach Luke Chapman said. “Llano did a good job of speeding up the game with their press and we have to do a better job of getting a better defense against them.”

Nic Adams and Sean Nolan both ended with double figure point totals but CL’s 33% shooting accuracy was not a good indication of good things for the Hawks in this contest.

Adams finished with 24 points and putting that number into perspective. Adams had 26 points last season for the entire year.

“We need to work on getting stops on defense,” Adams said. “Their ball movement got them the lead, but we need to contest more shots.”

“This wasn’t a bad game as we had improved on what we were working on against the press,” Adams continued.”

Nolan was his usual self by controlling the inside and being perfect from the floor with his three shots.

Canyon Lake had no momentum in this game with subpar shooting percentages and 21 turnovers to add to Llano’s domination starting the game.

When offensive rebounds (16) become that one item to be proud of, you then see that those rebounds are a result of missed shots. The Hawks averaged 13 offensive rebounds last season.

Canyon Lake has Skyler Tschoepe for the first time and with more practice time, the Hawks can expect improvement as this season gets started.

The press was on and CL did do a better job than their game with Fredericksburg earlier this season.

Improvement is the key and if this team can improve like Adams did in this game then the sky will be the limit.

Canyon Lake will be back in action on December 2nd when they travel to Somerset and then the Marion Tournament will follow that game later in the week.

Games will be a great learning ground as this team puts their game together.

Hawks JV get Science Credits with win over Llano, 36-30

Canyon Lake’s JV team was the second win of the night when the Hawks faced Llano.

This was a total team effort as their was no player scoring in double figures but on the flip side, all but two players scored in a game that defense prevailed, 36-30.

“I’m proud of the way we executed in the end,” Head JV Coach Brian Hooper said. “We got the job done.”

Llano jumped out to a 10-4 lead for the first quarter but that 10 points was on the scoreboard for equivalent of one quarter before the Yellowjacket could pick up a ball to fly it into the basket.

By that time, the Hawks had 15 unanswered points and had not only made up for their six point deficit but enjoyed a nine point lead, 19-10.

CLJV would not give up the lead for the remainder of this evening, but Llano did make it interesting as they clawed back to tie the score at 23 all, before Langford made a three point play the conventional way via foul shot after he made a basket.

William Gray helped in keeping Llano at bay with his clutch free throw shooting after the Yellowjackets once again closed the score, 32-30 with less than a minute of game time.

“Just knock it down and just shoot,” Gray said while talking about his free throw shooting in those waning moments.

Canyon Lake had several different lineups in this match-up as Head JV Coach Hooper looked like a mad scientist working with all the different players in this game.

“We can be a good team when we are all firing on all cylinders,” Guard Gerrit Wilkins stated. “We just need to maintain our aggressiveness.”

Good ball handling from several players also helped in icing this game for Canyon Lake.

“You try not to think about the score and you have to envision the ball going in,” Wilkins said while answering a question about how well the Hawks shot their free throws at the end of the game. “It helps when you practice.”

Canyon Lake has a lot of new players and having a win with all the new surrounding players made this game very satisfying.

“We are starting to get more comfortable, but we are not where we want to be yet,” Wilkins closed talking like a coach.

“Coach puts the players out on the court who are his best players on how he wants to run his offense,” Gray said with resolve. “We are talking more and trying to get in our right sets.”

Canyon Lake JV will be a fun team to follow this year as they try to see what Scientist Hooper will do next.

Just make sure you are wearing your Goggles when working around the Bunsen Burner!!
