Boys Soccer Can’t Keep lead in Loss to Boerne, 3-1

Canyon Lake’s Soccer teams started their district play last Tuesday and found that a Greyhound is fast in dribbling a soccer ball, in their loss to Boerne.

Junior Mike Thorpe scored his 10th Goal of the season in loss to Boerne

The Hawk Boys team did put a minor scare in Boerne as they scored their first goal when Mike Thorpe was near the goal for a put back with about 11 minutes left on the first half clock.

“We came out fresh and ready to play,” Thorpe scored first. “We were countering their attack and they could not hit the target.”

That goal for Thorpe was his 10th for this season which has to be a big change for this Junior that was on a team that scored just three goals for the season during his Freshman campaign and six goals last year.

Now Thorpe has scored more goals than the Hawk team had in his first two years of competition.

During the second half of play, Thorpe had a break away that was stopped by a collision when the Boerne Goalie rushed to stop Thorpe’s momentum.

There was carnage on the field after a hit that a hockey team would be proud of.

“I knew he (the goalie) was coming out,” Thorpe said sidestepping. “I tapped the ball to the side to get away from him but the field was wet and I slipped and could not get around him.”

Boerne would score their tying goal eight minutes later as both teams went into halftime tied, 1-1.

The Greyhounds would waste no time in scoring their go ahead goal with 41 seconds gone in the second stanza as their speed was evident in making a statement quickly.

Senior Buddy Glass had 10 saves in loss to Boerne

Canyon Lake would rely on Buddy Glass to keep this game close as Boerne pressured Canyon Lake in much of that second half as they were finally awarded when they scored an insurance goal late in the second half for the final score, 3-1.

“We have a chemistry on this team as each player likes each other,” Glass said half full. “We have had teams that did not play well together but tonight it could have been worse and it was good to hold them to three points.”

Glass ended the game with 10 saves as Boerne pressured CL for most of that second half of action.

“They (Boerne) have a good first touch off the ball and they can pass it,” Glass said. “Our teams in the past could not pass the ball as well as this year’s team.”

This might be one of the Hawks fastest teams they have fielded but it was still no match for the speed and passing skills of Boerne.

Canyon Lake can take solace in how bad Boerne put a hurt on Wimberley in their first district game, 7-1 last Friday.

The Hawks will face each district opponent three times in this five team District 28-4A grouping.

Canyon Lake is still very much in this year’s race and will go to class to learn how to play better in their next match.

“We will watch the video and see what we did wrong and make it better for our next game,” Thorpe closed. “We will make it to perfection.”

CL Hawks will travel to Bandera for their next game this Friday and return home to host Fredericksburg on Tuesday, February 10.
