The season is at the doorstep and the ReSporter caught up with Coach Trent Dunavant for some more ammo.

Coach Dunavant is the Junior Varsity Head Coach while also helping the Varsity as the Receivers and responsibilities in the Special Team area.

The JV finished on a roll last year and Coach Dunavant let us know how the players would handle the step up.

“The JV will have to clean things up,” Coach Dunavant started. “They are one year older and a year stronger…they will have the chance to be better and more mature.”

“The receivers ran the same plays as the varsity receivers did and they should know everything the varsity ran,” Trent Dunavant said.

The junior varsity receivers were literally everywhere last season, catching passes as well as running the routes. The JV was very strong across the board last season and now those same players have a chance to upgrade an already strong varsity.

The varsity receivers only lost a few of the players that helped significantly last season. Now the team will be adding much more strength in this area for the team.

Richard Howell, Todd Pippin, and other seniors accumulated 46 passes for 675 yards. The returning players that caught a pass last year had the following numbers, 80 catches for 1,233 yards. The totals are doubled and then you add the players coming up from JV and you have to think the senior’s numbers can be matched and increased.

“(Matt) Magness could catch balls thrown by me,” Coach Dunavant said. “He has great hands and he is playing tight.”

Senior Magness will be looking at a break out season and has the ability to be the go to receiver for whoever the quarterback might be.

“We’ve got to adapt and utilize all our weapons,” Dunavant continued. “We have some kids that are really fast, and we can move some to the slot to get the ball in more hands.”

The Hawks have a chance to have a special season, but the fact that all these words are based on players that have not put the pads on since last year.

“We can’t help but be good this season,” a hesitant Dunavant said. “These are 15-18 year olds with a lot of variables, but we will give it our best shot.”

When asked about what type of goals that will be set for this season, Coach Dunavant did not hesitate, “I want all the Seniors to graduate, I don’t want anyone hurt, and I want them all to turn out to be better man than when they started.”

Thanks Coach, good luck this season and the ReSporter hopes all the goals are reached this season!
